PHOENIX – A five-run bottom of the first inning for Arizona State proved too much for the Utah Baseball team to rally from as the Utes fell, 8-3, in the middle contest of the teams' three-game series at Phoenix Municipal Stadium on Saturday night.
Kaden Carpenter and
TJ Clarkson each had solo home runs for Utah in the loss, while
Core Jackson contributed a double and scored a run. All three Utes had two hits apiece in the ballgame, as Jackson extended his hitting streak to six straight games.
Drake Digiorno will look to start a new on-base streak on Sunday as his 21-game run came to an end tonight.
ASU got on the board with a five-spot in the first inning as the Sun Devils strung together a two-out rally. Ryan Campos slapped a one-out double to the corner in right field, reaching third base after an error on the play. He would score on a sac fly and ASU added four more hits plus a walk for the early 5-0 lead.
Utah put runners into scoring position both in the second and third innings, but was unable to get on the board and chip away.
Jackson would get the Utes on the board in the fifth, doubling off the left field wall in front of the Utah bullpen. He would score after two wild pitches with
Kai Roberts up to bat; though Roberts walked the Utes were unable to do any further damage in the frame.
In the top of the sixth a double play erased a Clarkson leadoff single, but Carpenter answered on the very next pitch with a solo homer to straightaway center field. That brought the game to an 8-2 score. Clarkson added a solo shot in the eighth that landed out by the scoreboard in right-center, but that would be all for the Utes in an 8-3 final.
Merit Jones (2-2) received the loss for Utah and went four innings in his start.
Jackson Elder came on from the bullpen and took the Utes home from there. Four innings was Elder's longest outing as a Ute as he struck out a career-best five, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk.
