SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Baseball team bounced back from a fifth-inning solo shot for Utah Valley with 10 unanswered runs as the Utes won the first half of a home-and-home series, 10-1, on Monday night at Smith's Ballpark.
Utah (19-8) has won eight of its last 10 games and was led on the mound by
Colter McAnelly and lefty
Ernesto Lugo-Canchola. The duo combined for 14 strikeouts and allowed one run on five hits. A walk in the top of the seventh was not only the team's only walk allowed on the night; it was the only opposing leadoff batter to reach base.
Lugo-Canchola (1-0) earned the win, dealing the final four innings of the ballgame and striking out a season-high six batters. McAnelly went the first five innings in the start, setting down a career-best eight by 'K' and scattering three hits.
At the plate, seven different Utes combined for 10 hits;
Kai Roberts led the club with a 3-for-5 night including a triple, three RBI and two runs scored.
Landon Frei entered the game as a pinch hitter and remained in the game in left field, smacking his first collegiate triple in his second at bat. It drove in two runs and Frei later scored at well. He also had a stolen base on the night as the Utes tallied seven as a club.
Roberts' night included a pair of stolen bases; he now has 49 in his career—three short of tying the program record held by Corey Shimada (2006-09) and Kody Davis (2012-16).
Drake Digiorno,
Kaden Carpenter and
Tyler Quinn each had a pair of hits, while
TJ Clarkson knocked in a pair. Digiorno (16) and Clarkson (13) extended their respective reached-base streaks, with the latter hitting safely for the fifth straight contest.
McAnelly cruised right along after working out of a two-on situation in the opening inning. He had a 1-2-3 second and quickly struck out a Wolverine batter in the third after a two-out error put a runner on third.
Looking to strike first, the Utes had runners in scoring position both in the second and fourth innings but were unable to push anyone across the plate. Though UVU got on the board with a Burke Camper solo shot in the fifth, a two-out rally in the home half allowed the Utes to tie the score at one.
Hunter Antillon was hit by a pitch, moved up on a
Core Jackson walk and scored when Roberts poked a single past a diving UVU second baseman.
Utah took control with a seven-run sixth inning, batting around and belting out six hits. Frei's two-run triple kicked off the scoring after a Carpenter walk plus an infield single for
Tyler Quinn, then Frei came 90 feet home when
Matt Flaharty singled up the middle to give Utah a 4-1 lead.
Roberts came back up with Jackson on second and Flaharty at third, sending a 1-1 pitch back up the middle for a two-run single. Digiorno and Clarkson then had back-to-back RBI doubles to wrap up the inning with Utah in front, 8-1.
Lugo-Canchola erased a seventh-inning leadoff walk with a nice pickoff move to second base as Flaharty slapped the tag on. He then had an inning-ending strikeout.
Quinn would score after seventh inning stretch with a sac fly off the bat of Antillon. Then in the bottom of the eighth, Utah added one final tally when Roberts' leadoff triple was followed by a Clarkson sac fly.
Lugo-Canchola then went back out for the ninth and had two strikeouts in a 1-2-3 inning to wrap up the ballgame.
