SALT LAKE CITY – Things could not have gone much better for Utah Soccer this evening as it unveiled the brand new Ute Field with a 3-0 triumph over Utah State.
Holly Daugirda,
Haylee Cacciacarne and
Ali Schinko found the back of the net as the Utes notched their first win of the season.
"It was a great night for soccer," said head coach
Rich Manning. "Our team was so excited to play at our new home and you could see the energy and commitment come through all night long. We played some good soccer and scored quality goals. I want to give a big thanks to all the fans for coming out and supporting us."
It almost seemed fitting that a Salt lake City native scored the first goal at the new complex. Daugirda latched on to an
Aleea Gwerder cross and volleyed home in the 21
st minute. The Skyline product, who has played in every game of her career, picked up just her third goal.
Five minutes later, Utah doubled its lead through another senior. A cross from the far side of the field fell to
Makayla Christensen who tapped the ball to Cacciacarne. The Layton native tapped home the second goal for Utah, putting her side in total control before the half.
As good as the Utes played in the first half, they were even better in the second stanza, dominating play and creating a handful of great opportunities. The persistence finally paid off in the 83
rd minute as Utah broke out on a quick counter attack.
Brooklyn James and Schinko created a 2v1 situation and the two-sport star passed off to her German teammate, who iced the game with her first collegiate goal. The assist was also the first collegiate point of James' career
Carly Nelson was solid in goal and made a couple saves for the 14
th shutout of her career. She needs one more blanking to move into fourth place in Utah history.
Utah improved to 17-5 all-time against USU, 10-1 in Salt Lake City, and has out-scored the Aggies 11-0 over the last four contests.
The Utes are back in action on Sunday at 1 p.m. vs. Cal Poly. The game will be streamed live via UtahUtes.com
