Utes Earn Dominant Win Over Long Beach State

Utes post 5-1 victory over previously undefeated LBSU
LONG BEACH, Calif. - The University of Utah women's soccer team scored three goals in a span of just over 10 minutes in the first half and they rode that momentum to a 5-1 victory over Long Beach State on Saturday night at George Allen Field in Long Beach, Calif.
The Utes second road win of the season boosts their overall record to 3-3-2.
Both sides spent much of the early going carefully probing for an offensive opportunity, but Utah took full advantage of their first scoring chance of the night. A cross into the box by the Utes was headed outside the 18, but Kennedy Fletcher collected the loose ball at the top of the box and sent a left-footed effort past the keeper for the first score of the match in the 13th minute.
Utah didn't waste much time adding to their lead. This time, Shannon Davidson made a run down the left side of the attacking area and sent in a cross. LBSU's clearance attempt put the ball on the foot of Julia Oka, who fired a rocket into the back of the net for her second goal of the year. Less than five minutes later, Davdison added her name to the scoresheet. A Reese Clem pass found Fletcher at the top of the box and Fletcher's deflection put Davidson in on goal and she capitalized to the tune of her second score of 2026 and a 3-0 advantage for the visitors. Defensively, the Utes didn't allow a single shot in the first half and took their lead into the break.
In the second half, Utah's defense continued to be nearly impenetrable. The home team didn't get off a shot until the 64th minute and that effort was blocked. LBSU did cut the deficit to 3-1 on a penalty kick in the 70th minute, but that was the only shot on goal they managed all evening. For the Utes, that marked a new season-best for fewest shots on goal allowed.
Utah also had an offensive response to LBSU's score. In the 78th minute, a well-placed pass by Oka sent Sophie Bellini on a run towards the LBSU goal. The graduate forward outmaneuvered two defenders, made her way into the 18 and uncorked a shot that beat the keeper and made the score 4-1. The coup de grâce was applied by Katie Callaway in the 88th minute, when she headed in her team-high third goal of the year.

The next match on the schedule will also be Utah's 2026 Big 12 opener. They're scheduled to take on Arizona State on Friday at 8 p.m. MT in Tempe, Ariz.
