SALT LAKE CITY – Courtney Talbot's first goal of her young career was enough to help Utah Soccer cap a perfect weekend with a 1-0 win over Cal Poly.
With just the second shot of the game, the freshman netted in the 17
th minute as the Utes went out in front.
Ireland Dunn was able to lob a ball into the penalty area from the near side end line and Talbot looped the ball into the far left corner.
"I just made my run to the near post and it flicked off my big toe," Talbot said. "I think we wanted to compete harder than we did last weekend. We worked on keeping the ball on the ground in training and having confidence in our touches and connections. We are just more used to the system with everyone playing together and seeing the field this weekend"
The Utes continued to create chances as Sophie Brown made some big saves for the Mustangs, denying
Makayla Christensen and
Brianna Pearson on consecutive attempts to keep it a one-goal game.
Aleea Gwerder and
Tavia Leachman both headed corners over the bar, while Dunn and
Kylee Geis had tries held by Brown.
In the second half, Utah continued to pepper the Cal Poly goal. After Pearson and
Kristin Fairbairn went wide with chances, Pearson put two tries on frame. Christensen followed with a ball that wriggled just wide and a chip from Geis sailed narrowly over the crossbar. The final two chances fell to Dunn and Talbot, but neither player connected cleanly.
"Courtney has been dangerous in every game so far," head coach
Rich Manning said. "I thought Kristin brought energy all weekend and
Brooklyn James showed us what she is capable of.
Carly Nelson and Tavia, our stalwarts, held things down in the back."
Nelson recorded her second-straight shutout and moved into fourth place in the Utah record book with the 15
th blanking of her career
"I think we proved we are fighters because we competed in both games," Manning added. "I am pleased that we were able to score four goals this weekend and create a lot of chances. We were good on set pieces and defended well. We also had a lot people play and that helps us get them ready for what is next in their development."
"I have just been trying to adjust to the style of play," Talbot stated. "I am the newcomer so I have to learn from them. The coaches and other players have helped me and the other freshmen make that adjustment."
Utah is on the road next weekend, starting with a Friday night contest at BYU. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Provo
