SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Utah baseball came up short in the second game of the series to the Cal Bears, falling 6-4 at Smith's Ballpark on Saturday, May 4.
Utah held a 4-3 lead going into the eighth, but Cal tied things up and then hit a two-run homer to take the lead they would eventually hold onto.
Shea Kramer led the way going 4-5 on the day. In all, five Utes had multiple hits in the game.
Utah struck first scoring in the second inning with two runs on three hits.
Briley Knight and
Chase Fernlund both singled to begin the inning. After a sacrifice bunt by
Dominic Foscalina,
Matt Richardson singled them home to go up 2-0 early.
The Bears came right back in the next half inning to tie it up, but Utah also scored once more on a Knight sacrifice fly to go back up 3-2.
After the Bears tied up back up in the fourth, it stayed that way until the seventh when Utah took the lead again. Kramer got his third hit of the day with a double and Knight came up clutch with a single to right field for his second RBI of the day.
Cal put pressure on the Utes in the eighth tying things up with a double, and then the next batter homered to put them up 6-4.
The Utes had a runner on in the eighth and ninth, but couldn't push any more runs across the plate to fall to the Bears.
Joshua Tedeschi got the start and went 5.1 innings and only gave up three runs on seven hits.
Zac McCleve ended up with the loss after coming in to start the eighth.
Tedeschi, McCleve and
Jacob Rebar each had three strikeouts to total nine for the game for Utah.
Utah and Cal will wrap up their three-game series at Smith's Ballpark on Sunday, May 5 beginning at noon. Originally, the game was scheduled for 1 p.m. but was moved up an hour.
