FIRST PITCH
After winning its second game in a row after a midweek win over UNLV, the Utes are traveling east to play in a tournament at East Carolina.
They will open up with ECU on Friday at 1:30 followed by playing Western Carolina on Saturday and Wright State on Sunday. Originally, the East Carolina game was scheduled for a 2:30 start, but due to the threat of inclement weather, the game has been moved up an hour. Both ECU and Western Carolina have gotten off to good starts as the Pirates are 5-3 and the Catamounts are 4-2. Wright State is 2-3, but had a great 2018 season making it to the NCAA Tournament.
SERIES HISTORY
It is the first meeting between Utah and all three of its opponents this weekend.
BATS EXPLODE AGAINST UNLV
The Utes got off to a hot start against UNLV scoring five runs in the first inning. They held that lead until the eighth inning when the Rebels scored four in the bottom half to go up 7-6.
Unfazed, Utah came right back by sending 15 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs to go on to win 16-7.
Leading 12-7,
Zack Moeller put the game out of reach for good with a grand slam. For the game, Moeller finished with six RBI.
Along with Moeller having six RBI, three other Utes had multiple RBI as
Chandler Anderson had four,
Isaac Cruz had two and
Christian Almanza had two.
Every batter in the game for Utah ended up scoring in the game.
The 16 runs are the most the Utes have scored since they had 23 runs against Utah Valley in 2017. The 10 runs in one inning is the most they have scored since they had 11 in the second inning against Cal in 2017.
MIGUELES HAS STRONG START
Erick Migueles has been on fire to start the season. He is hitting .423 going 11-26 from the plate and leads the team with seven RBI.
He's had two hits in four of the seven games this season and came up with an RBI in six of the seven game this season. His slash after the first two weekends is .423/.538/.485.
Until the last game against UNLV, going back to last season Migueles had an RBI in 13 straight games. He finished with one RBI in each game against Washington and had seven RBI against Washington State in a three game series.
This season he had one RBI in the first five games and then had two RBI against San Diego.
MOELLER RETURNS TO LINEUP
After sitting out the 2018 season with Tommy John surgery,
Zack Moeller returned to the lineup as a catcher or designated hitter and is expected to be a boost not only for the offense, but also the defense behind the plate.
After having a slow start in the first two weekends at the plate, Moeller's bat woke up against UNLV. He had two hits and totaled six RBI with a two-run single and then hit a grand slam in the ninth inning to blow the game open.
In 2017, he started 47 games and played in 49. He hit .265 and had 30 RBI. He was second on the team with five home runs.
