PROVO, Utah – A six-run fifth inning lifted the Utah baseball team to an 8-4 win over BYU on Tuesday evening in Provo.
Utah (10-28) broke a 2-2 tie with the scoring barrage in the fifth inning and
Spencer Kevin Johnson and Josh Tedeschi were strong in the mound in the middle innings in propelling the Utes to the win. Johnson, who earned the win, allowed two runs (one earned) and two hits with five strikeouts over his two innings. Tedeschi threw two scoreless innings with five strikeouts while
Trenton Stoltz closed out the game with three quick outs in the ninth.
Utah was led at the plate by three hits each from
Chandler Anderson and
Oliver Dunn, who were both 3-for-5. Anderson also scored two runs and had an RBI.
Rykker Tom had two hits with two RBI and
Matt Richardson also drove in two runs on the night.
Jacob Rebar earned the start on the mound, throwing three innings and allowing two runs on four hits with two strikeouts.
Riley Pierce surrendered one hit with a strikeout in his one inning pitched.
Tied at 2-2 after four innings with each team scoring single runs in the first and third innings, Utah took the lead with a six-run fifth. Tom and
Erick Migueles hit back-to-back doubles for the first run of the inning.
Braden DeBenedictis singled to put runners at the corners which led to a run on a squeeze bunt by
Dominic Foscalina. Richardson had the big hit of the inning with a two-RBI double to right center.
DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., drove in Richardson with a double and Anderson continued the scoring barrage with an RBI single to give the Utes an 8-2 lead.
BYU scored two runs in the seventh on three hits, one of which was unearned after an error, to cut the Utah lead to 8-4.
The contest was the third of a four-game series against the Cougars with the Utes leading 2-1. The final game will be held in Salt Lake City on May 8.
The Utes return to Smith's Ballpark on Friday, April 27, to open a three-game Pac-12 series against Arizona. First pitch is at 6:00 p.m. MT.
