Utah Baseball Falls to Nebraska, 7-4

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The Utah baseball team closed out its Arizona trip with a 7-4 loss to Nebraska on Saturday afternoon.
Nebraska took a third-inning lead and although the Utes cut the lead to a single run twice during the game, they failed to gain a lead.
Utah (0-7) was led at the plate by freshman Matt Richardson in a 3-for-4 performance. DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., Oliver Dunn and Shea Kramer each had two hits while Rykker Tom and Kramer both drove in runs. The Utes out-hit Nebraska, 12-9.
Brett Brocoff pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits with seven walks and five strikeouts in the loss. Spencer Kevin Johnson, Justin Kelly and Spencer Johnson all made appearances on the mound.
Brocoff got out of a bases-loaded jam with a strikeout in the first inning and both teams left runners on base in the second before Nebraska broke through with a run in the third. Two walks and a single loaded the bases with one out, leading to an RBI single. An infield ground out and another Brocoff strikeout would get the Utes out of the inning.
Utah left runners on base in the fourth before getting on the board in the fifth. Richardson singled and Keirsey doubled leading to an RBI ground out from Tom to tie the game at 1-1. The Huskers came back in the bottom of the fifth to score two runs and pull back ahead for a 3-1 lead. Two leadoff walks led to runners scoring on a ground out and RBI double.
The Utes got a run back in the sixth inning with Chandler Anderson reaching on an error and Dominic Foscalina hitting a double, leading to Shea Kramer scoring on a wild pitch, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Nebraska again rallied back, scoring two in the bottom of the sixth after a walk and two hits, then continuing to pull ahead with two more runs in the bottom of the seventh after three hits for a 7-2 lead.
Utah cut the deficit to 7-4 in the eighth inning with a pair of runs. Anderson walked to lead off the inning and scored on an RBI double from Kramer. Kramer would score on his second wild pitch of the game later in the inning but Utah would strand two on base with the rally ending on a ground out.
Utah had two hits in the top of the ninth before a ground out ended the game.
The Utes will look to get back on track next weekend with a three-game series against Santa Clara beginning on Friday, March 2.
