SURPRISE, Ariz. – A rough start doomed the Utah baseball team in a 7-2 loss to Ohio State to open its four-game series in Surprise, Ariz., on Tuesday evening.
Utah surrendered seven runs in the first inning to the Buckeyes and were forced to play catch up the rest of the night. After the early struggles the Ute pitchers settled down and did not allow a run the remainder of the game.
Rykker Tom and
Oliver Dunn led Utah at the plate with two hits each. Dunn and
Wade Gulden each drove in runs for the Utes while Gulden also walked twice and had a hit. OSU had just one more hit than Utah, 10-9.
Utah used four pitchers on the night.
Riley Pierce earned the loss in his first career appearance, allowing four runs and two hits with two walks.
Jacob Rebar pitched 4 2/3 innings, surrendering three unearned runs and six hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
Justin Kelly allowed one hit over 1 1/3 innings while
Spencer Kevin Johnson also gave up just one hit over two innings pitched.
Ohio State scored its seven runs in the bottom of the first inning on five hits, three walks and one error.
Utah got on the board in the fourth inning when Tom hit a one-out single and he scored on an RBI double off the bat of Gulden. The Utes added a run in the sixth inning as
Chandler Anderson hit a two-out double to left field. He advanced to third on a wild pitch, scoring on Dunn's RBI single.
Utah stranded runners on base in five different innings.
