Van der Veen Lifts Utes to Victory

FULLERTON, Calif. - No. 17 Utah Soccer was able to rebound on the road Sunday evening with a 2-1 double overtime victory at Cal State Fullerton. After knotting the game late with a free-kick, Paola van der Veen headed home an Eden Jacobsen cross for the winner.
"I saw Eden in a great spot to make the cross and I just thought 'get to it,'" Van der Veen said. "I don't know how it went in but it did and that's all that matters."
Van der Veen has now scored four goals in the last three contests for the Utes as they handed the Titans their first loss of the season.
"We played a really good opponent on their home field in difficult conditions," head coach Rich Manning said. "After falling behind, we showed the characteristics of a quality team."
Utah's first shot of the game did not arrive until the 35th minute when Max Flom fired wide and two minutes later, Ella Ballstaedt forced a save from Fullerton keeper Morgan Bertsch. Meanwhile, the Ute defenders were keeping the Titans at bay, holding them without a shot on goal during the first period.
"Fullerton did what they do really well, force you to change your tactics a little bit," Manning stated. "It took us a while to adjust and even when things were not going well, we hung in there and battled. After we figured some things out, the game turned around for us."
In the second half, Utah had its chances to open the scoring as Hailey Skolmoski flashed one wide in the first five minutes. Van der Veen and Max Flom also had tries held by Bertsch. In the 56th minute, Holly Daugirda had a shot blocked and the ball caromed right to Skolmoski who had her attempt cleared off the line by a Titan defender.
Despite the pressure, Fullerton was the team that went in front on Atlanta Primus' fourth goal of the season. Utah cleared a corner kick but the re-entry caught the Utes off guard and while the defenders looked for an offside flag the ball was in the net for a 1-0 Titan lead in the 63rd minute.
Utah avoided letting in a second goal when Carly Nelson denied Samantha Koemans moments later and Utah used that chance to even the score. A foul on Fullerton was called at the other end and Van der Veen drilled her try just inside the crossbar to tie the score.
"I had a chance to take the free-kick from the perfect spot and the keeper was standing at the far post," Van der Veen said. "So I just tried to get it to the near post and it went in under the crossbar. We played a tough game Friday where we could not score and so we were not going to lose 1-0 again."
In the final 15 minutes, Utah defenders came up big on two occasions, deflecting shots before they reached Nelson in goal. Meanwhile, the Utes were attacking to try and kill the game off in regulation. Haylee Cacciacarne's header off a Natalee Wells corner trickled wide and Skolmoski narrowly missed ending the match on two separate chances.
The best chance of the first overtime fell to Natalie Vukic, who fired just over the crossbar. In the 102nd minute, Van der Veen provided the heroics.
"I thought we did an excellent job in the overtime," Van der Veen added. "Our defenders were fantastic all game and Carly {Nelson} made some big saves down the stretch."
"Lulu {Borges} stepped up and Haylee {Cacciacarne} did a nice job holding things down in the middle to break up attacks," Manning stated. "Ireland {Dunn} also helped us change the game, keeping the ball and creating problems."
Utah remains on the road but will have a short trip to Provo for the annual Deseret First Duel. The Utes and Cougars play Friday night at 7 p.m.
