SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah baseball team snapped a five-game win streak with a 10-1 loss to Washington State on Friday afternoon.
Washington State had a seven-run sixth inning en-route to the win.
The Utes (19-18, 9-11 Pac-12) had two hits on the day, coming from
Hunter Simmons and
Ellis Kelly, while
Dallas Carroll drove in Utah's lone run of the game.
Riley Ottesen threw 5 1/3 innings, allowing eight runs on nine hits in the loss, falling to 4-2 on the year. He also had two pickoffs. Josh Tedeschi threw 2 2/3 scoreless and hitless innings while
Trenton Stoltz and
Hunter Rodriguez also pitched.
The Cougars scored a run in the first inning for a 1-0 lead after a pair of hits and a stolen base.
Utah's
DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., was hit by a pitch in the first to lead off the first inning for Utah but was stranded on third.
Teams were mostly kept off the bases until the sixth, when Washington State scored seven runs on seven hits to take an 8-0 lead.
Utah put up its lone run of the game in the sixth inning.
Dominic Foscalina walked and Kelly had Utah's first hit of the day with a single. Keirsey also walked to load the bases with no outs. A strikeout got the first out while Carroll hit into a sacrifice fly to bring in a run. Although Simmons singled to re-load the bases, a ground out ended the threat.
The Cougars continued to pull ahead with two runs in the seventh inning for a 10-1 lead.
Utah stranded two on base in the seventh after a hit batter and walk, and also left a runner on in the eighth following a walk.
Utah and Washington State play the rubber match on Saturday, April 29, at 11:30 a.m. MT.
