UTAH NOTES
- Utah dropped four spots in the latest NFCA/USA Today rankings and two spots in the ESPN/USA Softball poll to No. 15 nationally
-Last week, Utah was No. 11 in the NFCA/USA Today poll. It was the highest Utah Softball had ever been ranked since the polls were introduced in 1995.
- Utah ranks 23rd nationally with a team batting average of .324.
- Hannah Flippen recently surpassed the 200-hit and 100-RBI plateaus for her career. She is two runs shy of setting the Utah career mark for runs scored set by Sandy Rhea (1995-98).
- Flippen currently sits second in the Pac-12 in slugging percentage (.779) and runs batted in (32), fourth in doubles, sixth in on-base percentage (.515) and batting average (.422) and 12th in runs scored and homers.
- Anissa Urtez recently surpassed 200 hits for her career and currently owns the eighth-highest batting average among Pac-12 players (.419)Â
- She also ranks 12th in the league in runs driven in. With 39 doubles, she is two shy of moving into the top-five all-time at Utah
 - With 26 runs batted in, Heather Bowen ranks seventh in the Pac-12. The junior recently notched the 100th hit of her career.
- Utah currently ranks 14th in the nation with a combined team ERA of 1.47. All three pitchers rank among the top 15 in the Pac-12 in ERA
- Katie Donovan is fourth in the Pac-12 with 11 wins and ranks sixth in strikeouts She recently surpassed 300 K's for her career and has also notched two saves
- Defensively, Utah leads the league in double plays turned, 18th in the nation. This comes after ranking second in the nation last season.
- The Utes have also shown a penchant for stealing bases, swiping an average of 1.1 per contest, second among Pac-12 teams
- The Utes are one of seven Pac-12 teams ranked among the top 30 nationally in the RPI
VIRAMONTES NAMED PAC-12 PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Utah's Miranda Viramontes was named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week by the conference office on Mar. 21.
Viramontes won two of three games as Utah swept No. 10 UCLA on its home field, (2-0, 0.64 ERA). She limited the Bruins to one run on nine hits in 11 innings, striking out six and walking none.Â
She is 7-1 with a 1.22 ERA and recently notched the 200th strikeout of her career. She also ranks 10th nationally in walks per seven innings.
Viramontes threw a perfect game vs. CSU Bakersfield and has a propensity for winning big contests, turning in complete game victories this season over No. 13 Tennessee and No. 10 UCLA.
In last year's NCAA Tournament, she set the tone with 6 2/3 scoreless innings against Illinois, striking out six batters then had a career-high nine strikeouts in a complete game vs. No. 9 Kentucky. She also picked up her second save of the season when she closed the door on the ninth-ranked Wildcats.
A honorable mention All Pac-12 pick in 2015, she was named to the All-Freshman Team after being named Freshman of the Week once.
LAST WEEKEND
The Utes dropped a doubleheader at home to No. 3 Oregon after rain called off games on Saturday and Monday.Â
In the first game, the Utes gave up a season-high 12 runs as the Ducks hit the ball hard and took advantage of some sloppy fielding to plate five unearned runs.
In game two, Utah out-hit Oregon but the Ducks used the long ball while the Utes could only muster singles. Overall, Utah had just one extra base-hit and batted .213 during the doubleheader.Â
BARRERAÂ NAMED PAC-12 FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Utah outfielder Alyssa Barrera was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week on Feb. 28 for her performances on the field at the Mary Nutter Classic.
The Chino Hills, California native led the team with four runs scored, a .438 batting average and also slugged .563. She reached base safely in her first 13 games and opened her collegiate career with an 11-game hit streak.
She currently ranks fourth in the Pac-12 and leads the Utes with 30 runs scored and is one of the five toughest players in the conference to strikeout.
FLIPPEN PEGGED AS SENIOR CLASS AWARD CANDIDATE
Hannah Flippen was named as a candidate for the 2017 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate softball. Thirty of the top NCAA softball student-athletes who excel both on and off the field were selected earlier this season.
For her career, Flippen owns the highest batting average of any Ute ever at .386 (Cyndee Bennett, .371, 1994-97).Â
Last season, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association named Flippen an All-American. The Ute second baseman was also named the 2016 Pac-12 Player of the Year and tabbed as an Academic All-America First Team selection by CoSIDA.
Prior to the start of this season, Flippen was named to the USA Softball Player of the Year Watch List and also earned a spot on the US National Team.
