SALT LAKE CITY – The long ball lifted the Utah baseball team to a 5-1 win over New Mexico State on Friday afternoon to open a three-game series against the Aggies.

Dallas Carroll each had two hits.
Jayson Rose earned the win on the mound, striking out six over seven innings, allowing one run on two hits with three walks.

Trenton Stoltz also pitched.
Utah stranded two on in the first inning before Gulden hit the first homer of the day in the second for the Utes.
New Mexico State tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth inning. With two outs, a double to right field and two walks loaded the bases for a run to score on a wild pitch before a ground out ended the inning.
Utah left a runner on in the fourth inning, after
Hunter Simmons singled to lead off the inning and moved to third with one out but a pair of strikeouts ended the threat. Carroll singled and stole second in the sixth but was also stranded on base. Utah got a double play to get out of the seventh inning after a leadoff single.
Moller put Utah back in the lead, 2-1, in the seventh with a solo home run, his second of the year.
New Mexico State's biggest late scoring threat came in the eighth on a leadoff triple following a valiant diving effort by Rose in the outfield. An infield ground out got the first out of the inning and the runner got picked off third base on a great play by Moeller and Carroll. Dracher got a strikeout on the next pitch to end the inning.
Utah added three runs in the eighth on homers from Keirsey and
Josh Rose, with Rose's a two-run shot following a walk to Simmons, and Drachler got three quick outs in the ninth to end it.
