SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Valley took a late lead to overtake the Utah baseball team, as the Utes fell 7-6 to the Wolverines on Tuesday evening.
With the game tied at 4-4, Utah took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning before Utah Valley came back with three runs in the top of the eighth to pull ahead. The game-winning run just beat a throw home.
Dallas Carroll led Utah at the plate with a 4-for-5 performance. Hunter Simmons went 2-for-4 with two RBI while DaShawn Keirsey, Jr. and Cody Scaggari each had two hits.
Utah used five pitchers. Riley Ottesen got the start, surrendering one run on three hits with four strikeouts over four innings. Andre Jackson and Trenton Stoltz each allowed three runs over 1 2/3 innings each. Dylan Drachler pitched 2/3 of an inning and Josh Tedeschi did not surrender a run or hit in the final inning pitched.
Utah took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning, rallying with two outs. Carroll singled and stole second. Simmons sent in the first run of the game with an RBI single to right center while Max Schuman followed with an RBI single for the second run of the inning.
Both teams scored in the fourth inning as Utah Valley got on the board following a leadoff walk, stolen base and RBI single. The Utes countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Scaggari and AJ Young both singled while Kody Davis walked to load the bases. Keirsey, Jr. drove in a run with a single through the left side and Kellen Marruffo drew a walk, sending in two runs to give the Utes a 4-1 lead.
Utah Valley tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the sixth. A leadoff single and walk put two on base leading to an RBI single and two-RBI triple to even the score.
The Utes pulled back ahead with two runs in the seventh inning to take a 6-4 lead. Carroll doubled to right center and Simmons and Scaggari both singled to drive in runs.
Utah Valley took a 7-6 lead after a three-run eighth inning. The Wolverines hit an RBI triple and two-RBI double, with the go-ahead run just beating the throw to the plate.
The Utes out-hit Utah Valley, 14-10, but struggled with runners left on base, leaving the bases loaded in the fourth and seventh innings and stranding two on in the eighth. Utah stranded 11 altogether.
Utah returns to Smith's Ballpark on Friday, April 1, for a 6:00 p.m. contest to open a three-game series against Arizona.
