STANFORD, Calif. – The Utah Utes (13-4, 4-2) downed the No.7-ranked Stanford Cardinal (10-4, 4-2), snapping an 11-game losing streak to the Cardinal and recording the first ever road win in Maples Pavilion.
Beating Stanford for only the second time in school history and the first time since 2000, Utah beat Stanford in four sets (26-24, 20-25, 25-23, 25-19) on Sunday afternoon. This is the first time the Utes have won three straight matches on the road against AVCA top-25 ranked opponents. Utah has downed No. 9 BYU, No. 16 Colorado, and now No.7 Stanford all on the road.

Utah and Stanford were tied early in the first set at 7-7, until Stanford made a 3-0 run to take their largest lead of the set at 10-7. A block from juniors
Eliza Katoa and
Tawnee Luafalemana gave the Utes a start to the 7-0 run that changed the momentum of the set and forced Stanford to take a timeout trailing 14-10. Utah led 19-15 after a kill and service ace from junior
Adora Anae, but Stanford scored the next six of seven points to lead 21-20. After trading points, back-to-back kills by Katoa and Anae would give Utah a 26-24 win to take the first set.
The Utes and Cardinals would go back and forth early into the second set. Stanford led 13-12 and would rally off two points heading into the media timeout and then score two more points to force Utah to call a timeout falling behind 17-12. A kill from Anae would stop the run, but Utah wasn't able to complete the comeback and Stanford took the second set 25-20, to tie the match at 1-1.
Stanford came out of intermission scoring three straight points to open the third set forcing Utah to take its first timeout. After settling in, Utah worked its way back in to the match with kills from sophomore
Emma Kirst and junior
Carly Trueman, followed by a service ace from Anae to tie things up at 5-5. Stanford would build a lead at 15-12, but the Utes went on a 5-0 run to take the lead 17-15. Back-to-back kills from Anae would force Stanford to take a timeout trailing 21-18, but Stanford would eventually tie the set at 23-23. A pair of kills from Trueman would lift the Utes to take the third set 25-23.
Utah had a 3-0 run early in the fourth set to lead 6-3, but Stanford would come back to cut the Utah lead 8-7. After a Stanford timeout at 10-7, the Cardinal would score two points but a kill from Anae would start an 8-0 Utah run to lead 18-9. Later in the set, Stanford would score four straight points to pull within five points, but a kill from Anae would end the run at 21-15. Off a kill from Anae, Utah would win the set 25-19, and the match 3-1.
The Utah offense had multiple contributors with Anae leading the way with 20 kills, Trueman following with 13 kills with a .389 hitting effort, Luafalemana added 11 kills on a .476 hitting percentage, Katoa pitched in 10 kills, and sophomore
Berkeley Oblad added nine kills.

Jessie Openshaw distributed for the offense with Choy dishing out 36 assists and Openshaw adding 27 assists. Anae also totaled 4 service aces.
The Utes remain on the road facing Washington and Washington State next Friday and Sunday, Oct. 14 and Oct. 16. Both matches will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks with the first serve against Washington set for 8 p.m. MT and Washington State at 1 p.m. MT.
