SALT LAKE CITY - The No. 23 Utah Utes earned a three-set sweep over CSUN in the first of four matches that will be played at the Huntsman Center on Saturday, downing the Matadors 25-20, 25-18 and 25-8.
The Utes, who moved to 2-0 on the season, will close out the Utah Classic later this evening against Lipscomb (1-0) at 5 p.m., while CSUN (0-2) plays Idaho State (0-1) at 5 p.m.
Utah opened the first set with a 4-0 run, which included a kill and a service ace from sophomore Eliza Katoa. Utah would later lead 8-4, but a 7-2 run from the Matadors helped give CSUN an 11-10 lead and forced the home squad to call a timeout. The Utes scored five straight points to take a 15-11 lead, but CSUN would again climb all the way back to tie it 19-19 late in the set. Utah followed winning six of the last seven points to take the set, 25-20.
The Utes led by as many as eight points, up 10-2 early in set two, but CSUN would claw its way back and get within a point down 15-14. Utah called a timeout to talk things over and all they did coming out of the break was close out the set with a 10-4 run, winning the set 25-18 and going up 2-0 in the match.
Utah put the match away in the third set, downing the Matadors 25-8 en route to the three-set sweep. The Utes opened the frame with a 6-1 run and following a CSUN sideout, Utah proceeded to register the next 10 points and increase its lead to 16-3. The Matadors would win six of the next 11 points, but Utah closed out the set with four straight points to earn the double-digit set-win.
A trio of sophomores led the Utes offensively, as Katoa and Adora Anae posted a team-high nine kills each and Carly Trueman added eight kills on .700 hitting. Utah hit .349 as a team, while limiting CSUN to a clip of just .144.
Senior Kendall Cygan led Utah with 15 assists, but redshirt freshman Jessie Jorgensen added 14 assists and a team-high 15 digs to record the first double-double of her career.
Anae and freshman Berkeley Oblad led the Utes at the net, as both players recorded three total blocks each. Anae had a team-high two solo blocks and Oblad led the team with three block assists.
Katoa, Cygan and Jorgensen led the Utes at the service line, as all three players registered a pair of kills on the day. Utah finished the match with a season-high nine aces - one more than last night's eight aces.
Utah tallied 44 kills to CSUN's 33, 38 assists to 28, and out-dug the Matadors 61-51. Utah outblocked the opposition 11-3 in total blocks and 6.5-2.0 in team blocks.
