SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah volleyball team won its first Pac-12 road match of the season at Cal this evening, 25-27, 25-21, 26-28, 25-22, 15-10.
Sophomore Adora Anae matched her career-high with 28 kills and had a double-double with 11 digs. Senior Kendall Cygan also finished with a double-double, recording 23 assists and 12 digs.
Freshman Megan Shughrou notched a new career-high with 29 digs, eclipsing her previous high of 22. Sophomore Eliza Katoa had a career-high six blocks and classmate Carly Trueman had a career-high 15 kills.
The Utes have now won four of six against the Golden Bears and the last three at Haas Pavilion. This was the first five-set conference win since beating Washington last November.
Cal jumped out to a 9-5 lead in the first set after a kill by Alyssa Jensen but the Utes fought back to within a point after a kill by Trueman, an ace from Shughrou and a kill from Anae.
The Golden Bears pushed the margin to five before a Utah rally. Trailing 16-12, Anae caught fire and notched four consecutive kills to even the score. Then, an ace from Jorgensen was followed by another Anae kill to cap a 6-0 scoring run for the Utes.
Cal responded with a four-point run of its own to regain the lead, 20-18. Trueman scored four of the next five points for Utah as it evened the score once more, 23-23. After Berkeley Oblad's kill gave Utah set point, the home side scored the next two points to go back in front.
Another Oblad kill tied the score at 25-25 but Cal's Lillian Schonewise smashed the next two tries to give the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead in the match.
The next set went back-and-forth with neither team able to create some breathing room. Trueman and Oblad stepped up again with consecutive kills and then Anae and Oblad combined on a block to give Utah the first real advantage for either side at 20-16.
The Utes were able to keep the Golden Bears at a distance for the remainder of the set, closing it out on a Katoa kill and an attack error from Cal's Christine Alftin.
After the intermission, Cal scored six of the first nine points in the third set. Utah would eventually take the lead, 9-8, on an attack error by the Golden Bears. With the score tied 13-13, Anae crushed a kill, Katoa blocked a Cal attack and Brenna DeYoung forced a timeout from the home side with a point of her own.
Cal would go on a four-point run of its own to regain the advantage, 18-17, and the set would come down to a few crucial points at the end. The Utes held a 23-21 edge after Katoa and DeYoung combined on a block, but Cal rattled off the next three points to force a Ute timeout.
Katoa and Trueman notched back-to-back kills to give Utah set point but an attack error evened the score at 25-25. Another Trueman kill gave Utah another chance at taking the set but Cal's Janelle Jordan tied the score once more with a kill.
The Golden Bears took advantage of the opening and despite seven blocks by the Utes in the set, the home team grabbed a 2-1 lead by converting the next two points for a 28-26 victory.
Cal took a 9-5 lead to start the fourth set and still led 13-8 before Utah fought back. A kill from Anae got things going for the Utes as a Cal attack error was followed by a Katoa kill and a DeYoung solo block. After a timeout, Utah would take the lead, 15-14, on another kill by Anae.
The set stayed neck-and-neck until the very end when Utah pulled through and evened the match. Tied 22-22, a bad set gave Utah the lead. Shughrou followed with an ace and Trueman ended things with another kill.
In the fifth and final set, Utah grabbed seven of the first 11 points and never looked back. Leading 7-6, the Utes rattled off three points in a row and capped it with a Tess Sutton ace.
Leading 10-8, Utah scored three more points as a dual block from Emma Kirst and DeYoung put the Utes on the brink of victory. Jorgensen's second ace of the match and Utah's seventh brought things to a close with a 15-10 Utah victory.
Utah is back in action tomorrow evening at 6 p.m. PT vs. No. 7 Stanford. That match will be televised live on the Pac-12 Mountain and Bay Area networks.
