STANFORD, Calif. - Utah volleyball dropped a straight-set contest at No. 7 Stanford this evening, 25-19, 25-15, 25-18.
Adora Anae paced the Utes with nine kills and 14 digs as the Utes hit .043 for the contest. Kendall Cygan and Jessie Jorgensen tied for the team lead with 12 assists with the latter earning a double-double with 11 digs.
Utah was the aggressor in the first set, jumping out to a 9-4 lead and after a kill by Carly Trueman, the Cardinal were forced to call a timeout.
The lead grew to six before a three-point run by Stanford forced a Utah timeout at 16-13. Stanford proceeded to score the next three points to even the set and when all was said and done, had scored nine in a row to grab the lead.
A Kill by Eliza Katoa pulled Utah within two at 20-18, but that's as close as it would come as the Cardinal scored four in a row and won the set, 25-19.
In the second set, Stanford jumped out to an 8-3 lead and led 13-6 after a Utah timeout. The lead would eventually hit double digits at 20-9 and force the Utes into taking their second timeout.
A Trueman kill was followed by a Megan Shughrou ace and a Stanford attack error to give Utah a little momentum. However, it was short-lived as the Cardinal closed things out, 25-15, to take a two-set lead.
The two sides battled back-and-forth and were tied at 16-16 in the third set with Utah needing to get a win to stay in the match. After Stanford nudged ahead, another kill by Trueman cut the Ute deficit to one with the serve to tie. The No. 7 team in the nation showed its mettle though and scored the final six points to win the match, 25-18.
The Utes will honor their seniors in their final home match of the season, Wednesday at 4 p.m. against No. 2 Washington.
