Moraga, Calif. - The Utah volleyball team picked up a pair of wins on Saturday, downing Cal Poly (25-12, 25-15, 25-21) earlier in the day and then later defeating St. Mary's (28-26, 25-13, 25-20) at McKeon Pavilion.
With the two wins, Utah begin the season 5-0 for the third straight season, while both Cal Poly and St. Mary's each move to 1-3 on the year.
Utah did not waste any time in its first match of the day, picking up a 25-12 first set win over the Mustangs and then later cruising to a 25-15 win in the second set. Cal Poly managed to keep things close in the third set, but the Utes closed out the match with a 5-2 run to sweep the Mustangs in straight sets.
Seniors
Chelsey Schofield-Olsen led the Utes with nine kills on .381 hitting and
Shelby Dalton tallied a team-high 10 digs. Senior
Kalee Kirby notched a team-high 13 assists in the match and redshirt freshman
Carly Trueman notched five total blocks.
Utah hit .267 as a team and limited the Mustangs to just .041 hitting in the match, which included Cal Poly hitting just -.033 in the first set. Utah registered 38 kills in the match, compared to Cal Poly's 24 kills.
With the win, head coach
Beth Launiere notched the 475th career victory of her career.
The Utes rallied from a 21-18 deficit late in the first set against St. Mary's to win, 28-26. Utah again cruised in its second set, downing the Gaels 25-13.
After falling behind 3-1 early in the third set, Utah went on a 6-0 run and never looked back en route to a 25-20 win. The Utes swept its opponent for a second straight time on Saturday and have now won in straight set in three straight matches, as well as four of its five matches of the season.
Schofield-Olsen led the way with 11 kills in the evening draw and Dalton added nine kills as well. Sophomore
Tess Sutton led the team with 12 digs, while Dalton added 11 digs and a team-high five blocks on the evening. Freshman
Jessie Jorgensen tallied a team-high 15 assists and had two service aces as well. Senior
Bailey Bateman led the charge with four service aces as Utah finished the match with eight service aces overall.
The Utes will make quick return trip home to host Utah Valley this Tuesday, Sept. 9 at Crimson Court before returning to the road next weekend. First serve on Tuesday is set for 7 p.m.
