SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Utah seniors Shelby Dalton and Bailey Bateman, along with freshman Adora Anae, have each been named All-Pac-12 selections, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Dalton was named to the first-team and Bateman was tabbed an honorable mention selection, while Anae was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team. These are the first all-conference honors of any kind for each player.
Dalton, a right-side hitter out of Moab, becomes the first Ute in program history to earn Pac-12 First-Team honors after collecting 316 kills, averaging 2.80 kills-per-set and hitting .276 during the 2014 campaign. She led the team with 13 solo blocks and finished the regular-season with 81 block assists to record 94 total blocks on the year. She also managed to record 119 digs (1.05/set) and had one double-double on the season. Dalton was named a Pac-12 All-Academic First-Team selection last week.
"Shelby is very deserving of this award," said Utah head coach Beth Launiere. "She is a great student-athlete, with great mental toughness and has been a steady force for us all season. Shelby carried a huge load both offensively and defensively, often matching up with and controlling opponent's top hitters. There are a lot of great players in the Pac-12, so we're proud to have Shelby recognized on the all-conference team [as part of] the best volleyball conference in the country."
Bateman, a middle blocker out of Hooper, earned the team's third honorable mention selection over the past four seasons after finishing the year with 206 kills and a 1.84 kills-per-set average, while leading the Utes with a .328 hitting percentage. She registered six solo blocks and 126 block assists to finish with 132 total blocks on the season, and her 1.18 blocks-per-set ranks fourth in the Pac-12 and 80th in the nation. Bateman was named a Pac-12 All-Academic Second-Team selection last week and she was named a Capital One Academic All-District First-Team honoree in early November.
"Bailey has positioned herself as one of the top blockers in the conference, finishing fourth in blocks-per-set," said Launiere. "Her offense has been a key for us in our latest run of wins, and both her efforts and contributions to our success are recognized by this award, which is well deserved."
Anae, an outside hitter from Laie, Hawai'i, earned the program's first Pac-12 All-Freshman First-Team honor after collecting 250 kills and averaging 2.36 kills-per-set in her first season as a Ute. She had 114 digs (1.08/set), 65 total blocks (0.61/set) and recorded three double-doubles on the season.
"What a great honor for Adora to be recognized as one of the top seven freshman in the Pac-12, as there were a lot of great young players this year," said Launiere. "Adora established herself as a key player for us early in the year and her role increased as the season continued. She was a key contributor in our success and we are excited for her and this recognition."
The conference office announced its primary postseason awards on Tuesday as well, with Washington's Krista Vansant being named the league's Player of the Year and Oregon State's Taras Liskevych earning Pac-12 Coach of the Year honors. UW's Cassie Strickland was named Libero of the Year and Stanford's Madi Bugg was named Setter of the Year, while OSU's Mary-Kate Marshall was tabbed the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year. A list of the entire all-conference team can be found on the Pac-12 website or by clicking the link above.
The Utes, who currently rank No. 20 in the nation, finished the regular-season 19-12 overall and tied for seventh-place in the Pac-12 with a record of 9-11. Utah earned the program's 12th NCAA Championship Tournament bid and will face Kansas State in the first round this Friday, Dec. 5, in Lincoln, Neb. First serve is set for 3:30 p.m. (MST) at the Devaney Center.
