SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah Utes picked up back-to-back Pac-12 Conference wins after sweeping the No. 15-ranked UCLA Bruins (25-23, 25-23, 25-22) Saturday afternoon at the Huntsman Center. The Utes moved to 14-11 overall and 4-10 in Pac-12 play, while the Bruins fell to 17-8 on the season and 8-6 in conference matches.
With its win over No. 19 USC on Friday, Utah managed to win consecutive matches over a pair of ranked opponents for the first time since downing No. 20 Colorado State and No. 25 UNLV back in 2007.
"We just picked up two wins this weekend over two great teams," said Utah head coach Beth Launiere. "I think we are a good team and we have been saying that all along. It definitely helped to get back home and get rested up. We had our fans behind us and we had a good week of practice as well. When you have these things in place, good things happen."
Freshman Adora Anae helped give Utah a 1-0 lead after the first set, when her fourth kill of the set gave Utah a 25-23 win. Both teams traded points throughout the entire first set, but a late 5-1 run gave Utah a 23-19 lead despite UCLA winning four of the next five points, the Utes managed to take the first set after outhitting the Bruins, .226 to .172.
Utah opened the second set with two straight points before a 4-0 run helped give UCLA a two-point advantage. The Utes came right back to regain the lead 5-4 and then both teams would trade points until a 3-0 run gave Utah a 12-9 lead midway through the set. UCLA countered with a 6-1 run before Utah came all the way back to tie the set at 19-19.
Following a Bruin timeout, UCLA would score the next two points before Utah's run of 4-0 gave the Utes a 23-21 lead and forced UCLA to call is final timeout of the set. Senior Shelby Dalton recorded a kill out of the timeout, but UCLA came right back with consecutive points and forced Utah to call a timeout. Following a great dig from senior Lea Adolph, redshirt freshman Carly Trueman tallied home the kill and gave Utah a 2-0 lead after winning the second set 25-23.
The Utes opened the third set with a 4-2 run before UCLA battled back to tie the set at 5-5. After trading points with the Bruins, Utah tallied three straight points for an 11-8 lead. UCLA scored four of the next five points before a 3-0 run pushed Utah's lead to 15-12 heading into the media timeout. Back-to-back blocks would later give Utah a 17-13 advantage and despite UCLA's 5-2 run, Utah would go up 22-19 and force the Bruins to call a timeout.
UCLA won the point out of the break, but the Utes tallied a pair of kills and then won the set and the match on Katoa's 11th kill of the day.
Katoa finished with a team-high 11 kills and Trueman added seven kills on .500 hitting. Kirby notched a team-high 17 assists and junior Kendall Cygan added 16 assists while moving into Utah's all-time top-10 list with 1,712 career assists.
Trueman led the Utes at the net with eight total blocks and Dalton added five block assists as Utah out-blocked the Bruins 13.0 to 7.0 on the day. Kirby came within a dig shy of recording a double-double as she finished with a team-high nine digs in the match.
UCLA's Karsta Lowe led the Bruins with 17 kills and Julie Consani recorded a match-high 25 assists.
Utah finished the match hitting .250, while the defense limited UCLA to just .198 on the afternoon.
The Utes will return to action this Thursday, Nov. 13, with a home match against Washington State. The match will be aired live on the Pac-12 Networks with a first serve set for 8 p.m. inside the Huntsman Center.
