UP NEXT
The No. 23-ranked Utah Utes (17-12, 7-11 Pac-12) will cap off the 2014 regular-season with its final two home matches of the year, hosting No. 13-ranked Oregon (21-7, 11-7 Pac-12) this Tuesday at 7 p.m. and No. 18-ranked Colorado on Friday at noon.
Ute Proud Match
The school will honor Native American Heritage Month at Tuesday's match against Oregon. The players will wear a Ute Proud decal on their jerseys and the coaching attire will include a Ute tribal seal patch as well.
SENIOR DAY
Friday will serve as Senior Day for the Utah Volleyball program and the team will honor its six seniors as they take part in their final home games inside the Huntsman Center.
Utah's six seniors that will be recognized are: Lea Adolph, Bailey Bateman, Shelby Dalton, Kalee Kirby, Makenzie Moea'i and Chelsey Schofield-Olsen.
COVERING THE UTES
A live web-stream, which can be found at www.UtahUtes.com, will be available for Tuesday's match against Oregon, while Friday's regular-season finale will be aired live on the Pac-12 Networks (Dish Nework, Ch. 409; comcast Cable, Ch. 410, 757). LAST TIME OUT
Utah went 1-1 this past weekend, falling to No. 1 Stanford in straight sets (23-25, 15-25, 18-25) last Friday, but then rebounding nicely with a four-set win over Cal (25-8, 25-22, 21-25, 25-16).
The Utes gave the Cardinal everything it could handle in the first set, but he top-ranked home squad managed to hit .327 in the match en route to the sweep over the Utes. Senior Chelsey Schofield-Olsen led the team with eight kills and 15 digs, while senior Shelby Dalton and redshirt freshman Carly Trueman tallied a team-high three blocks each.
Dalton was one of four different Utah players to record at least 10 kills in the win over the Bears on Sunday. She finished with 15 kills on .483 hitting and senior Bailey Bateman added a season-high 13 kills, while hitting at a clip of .571. Senior Lea Adolph added a team-high 19 digs and senior Kalee Kirby notched 31 assists in the victory as well.
UTES REMAIN NO. 23 IN AVCA POLL
Utah made its season debut in the AVCA Top-25 Poll last week, coming in at No. 23 in the rankings. Following its 1-1 record this past weekend, the Utes remained at No. 23 in this week's top-25 rankings.
SCOUTING THE DUCKS
Oregon comes into Tuesday's match having won three-straight and four of its last five matches. The Ducks went 2-0 this past weekend with wins over NO. 17-ranked UCLA (25-20, 25-22, 33-31) and No. 25-ranked USC (24-23, 23-25, 25-13, 25-22).
Oregon is hitting .261 as a team and averages 14.56 kills (sixth in the nation, third in the Pac-12), 13.71 assists (fifth in the nation, third in the Pac-12), 1.13 service aces, 15.79 digs and 2.09 blocks per set.
The Ducks have six players with at least 150 kills or more on the season, but are led by Martenne Bettendorf's 367 kills (3.46/set) on the year. Liz Brenner follows with 309 kills (2.92/set), but her 24 service aces leads the team.
Maggie Scott leads Oregon with 705 assists (6.65/set) and Amanda Benson has a team-high 446 digs (4.21/set). Serena Warner leads the team at the net with 108 total blocks (1.04/set).
SCOUTING THE BUFFS
Colorado went 1-1 this past weekend, and just like the Utes, picked up a win against Cal (30-28, 25-16, 25-19) and were downed by Stanford (17-25, 18-25, 13-25).
CU has won three of its last four matches and five of its last eight coming into this week.
The Buffs currently rank fifth in the league, hitting .248 on the season, and are averaging 13.72 kills, 12.69 assists, 1.18 service aces, 13.30 digs and 2.38 blocks per set.
Taylor Simpson leads CU offensively and currently ranks 13th in the nation with 516 kills on the season. She ranks 10th in the nation with 4.65 kills per set. Her sister, Cierra Simpson, leads the team with 454 digs (3.95/set), while her other sister, Gabby Simpson, ranks second on the team with 551 assists (4.83/set). Nicole Edelman leads the Buffs with 729 assists (7.67).
Anna Pfefferle leads the team at the net with 121 total blocks (1.12/set), while T. Simpson follows with 65 total blocks.
SERIES HISTORY
Tuesday will mark the first meeting between the Ducks and the Utes this season. Oregon leads the all-time series 10-5 and has won the previous four meetings. Utah's last win over the Ducks was a 3-2 victory back on Oct. 28, 2011 in Eugene, Ore.
The Buffs came away with a 3-2 victory over the Utes in Boulder, Colo., earlier this season, but Utah still leads the all-time series 7-6. CU has won the previous two meetings, but Utah leads the series 4-3 since the two teams joined the Pac-12 back in 2011.
UTAH NOTES
The Utes head into the final two matches of the season having won five of its last six contests. Three of its past five wins have been against ranked teams, including an upset over then No.-2 ranked Washington.
Utah ranks 74th in the nation with a .236 team hitting percentage. The Utes have registered 1,463 kills on the season and rank 58th in the nation with 13.67 kills per set. Utah is averaging 12.66 assists and 14.16 digs per set, while ranking 46th in the nation with 2.49 blocks per set. Utah has 266.0 team blocks on the season, which currently ranks 66th in the nation.
Senior Chelsey Schofield-Olsen leads the team with 322 kills (3.01/set) and senior Shelby Dalton is just eight kills shy of reaching the 300 plateau, with 292 kills on the year (2.78/set).
Senior Kalee Kirby has a team-high 613 assists (6.07) on the season and junior Kendall Cygan follows with 469 (5.04/set). Senior Lea Adolph leads the team in both service aces (15) and digs (315), while senior Bailey Bateman has tallied a team-high 112 total blocks (1.13/set).
ACE THIS
Junior Kendall Cygan registered a career-high four service aces in Utah's win over Cal on Sunday. The Utes finished the match with a total of seven service aces - just one shy of tying its season-high mark of eight service aces the squad recorded against St. Mary's back on Sept. 6.
DIALED IN
Utah registered 63 kills and tallied its second-highest hitting percentage (.360) of the season this past Sunday against Cal. After hitting just .238 in the third set, the Utes came back with 18 kills while hitting at a clip of .643 in the fourth and final set. The squad's previous best hitting percentage in one set was .480, which the team recorded in the second set against Missouri State (Aug. 30).
Utah's top-two hitting efforts of the season have come in Pac-12 play. The Utes hit a season-high .429 in its sweep over USC back on Nov. 7.
RPI RANKINGS
Despite its only loss coming to No. 1-ranked Stanford, Utah dropped six spots to No. 46 in this week's RPI rankings.
Utah is one of 10 Pac-12 teams ranked inside the RPI's top-50 teams. Stanford leads the way at No. 1 and Washington follows at No. 4. Oregon is also ranked inside the top-10, coming in at No. 8 this week.
ALL-TIME LEADERS
Several Ute players continue to leave their marks on the Utah record books and with two matches left in the regular-season, these players will continue to add to their all-time resume.
Senior Chelsey Schofield-Olsen has played in 126 matches during her four-year career with the Utes, which ranks tied for eighth all-time. She will move into a tie for sixth-place with her 128th match played following this week's slate of matches. She has played in 462 sets, which currently ranks fourth-most all-time. Schofield-Olsen ranks first all-time with 4,099 career attacks and she moved into sole possession of third-place with 1,333 career kills. She also ranks fourth all-time with 1,240 digs in her career.
Senior Bailey Bateman moved into a tie for fifth-place all-time with 449 block assists and ranks eighth all-time with 470 total blocks in her four seasons with the Utes.
Senior Shelby Dalton ranks seventh all-time with 396 block assists in her career and she currently has 423 total blocks, which ranks 11th all-time. She is 13 total blocks shy from moving into the top-10 in total blocks.
Senior Lea Adolph moved into the top-10 in career digs this past weekend and currently ranks ninth all-time with 985 digs. With 15 more digs, she can become just the ninth player to eclipse the 1,000 dig mark.
Junior Kendall Cygan moved into sole possession of ninth-place all-time with 1,790 career assists. She needs just seven more assists to move into seventh-place.
UP NEXT
Utah will look to earn an at-large bid into the NCAA Volleyball Tournament for a second straight season when the tournament field is announced on Sunday, Nov. 30.
