LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Utah Volleyball team earned its first national ranking in more than six years, coming in at No. 23 in this week’s American Volleyball Coaches Association Poll, which was released by the AVCA office on Monday.
Utah, who is 16-11 overall on the season and 6-10 in Pac-12 play, has won four consecutive matches over the past two weeks, with three of those victories coming against top-25 ranked opponents. The squad most recently knocked off then-No. 2 ranked Washington in five sets this past Saturday in Salt Lake City.
This marks Utah’s first AVCA top-25 ranking since coming in at No. 17 back on Aug. 31, 2009. Overall, Utah has earned a national ranking on 86 different occasions since the AVCA introduced the poll back in 1982.
Utah is one of nine Pac-12 teams ranked in this week’s poll, with Stanford (26-0) coming in at No. 1 after earning all 60 first place votes. The Huskies (25-2) dropped three spots to No. 5 this week and are followed by No. 13 Arizona (21-7), No. 14 Oregon (19-7), No. 17 UCLA (18-9), No. 19 Colorado (17-11) and No. 22 Arizona State (17-11). USC (14-12) rounded out the Pac-12 teams in the poll, coming in two spots behind the Utes at No. 25.
Rounding out the top five teams this week was Wisconsin (24-2), who moved up to the No. 2 spot behind The Cardinal this week, while Texas (20-1) and Penn State (26-3) came in third and fourth, respectively.
Utah has jumped 19 spots in the NCAA’s RPI rankings over the course of its current four-match winning streak as well. Two weeks ago the Utes ranked No. 59 in the RPI standings, but with victories over the Trojans, the Bruins and the Huskies, Utah is ranked No. 40 in the RPI standings. The Utes are one of 10 teams ranked inside the RPI top-40 heading into this week’s slate of matches.
The Utes will travel to the Bay Area this weekend to face top-ranked Stanford on Friday, Nov. 21, before heading over to face Cal on Sunday, Nov. 23.
