"I'm proud of the way we fought and the team put forth a great effort," head coach Rich Manning said. "I'm disappointed with the result. It came down to making plays in the penalty areas. We had to do better at defending them in the box and we have to have more composure at the other end in front of goal."
Utah started off on the right foot, creating a quick corner attempt which saw Nykell Seymour fire high. In the 11th minute, Ali Allen was denied by UA goalkeeper Gabby Kaufman and Katie Taylor's rebound went high.
Lindsey Luke made her first two stops on consecutive attempts by Kaitlyn Lopez as the junior kept the Wildcats off the board. Utah`s last chance of the half came when Taylor narrowly missed putting her side in front during the 36th minute.
Arizona opened the scoring in the second half as freshman Gabriela Stoian scored her 11th goal of the season off a cross from Jaden DeGracie. The Wildcats almost doubled their lead but Luke was quick to deny Calisee Crisler in the 53rd minute.
Two minutes later, Kaufman stopped Seymour and in the 61st minute, Utah won a free kick in its defending half. Megan Trabert played a ball to Jenkins in the middle of the pitch and the senior uncorked a rocket from 35 yards that skimmed off the crossbar and in for the tying goal.
"Our kids were ready for this game today," Manning added. "We had a great week of practice and you always feel like you're going to come out and get the win, especially on our home field. Our team knew it w as a big game and they attacked it like they needed to this afternoon."
Taylor and Jenkins continued to power the Utes forward and the seniors almost connected for a goal in the 67th minute off a corner. However, UA received another goal from Stoian after some confusion in the penalty area for a 2-1 lead.
Jenkins would force Kaufman into two big saves in the final seven minutes of regulation as the Wildcats were able to escape with the victory.
The Utes will honor their seniors prior to the match on Sunday vs. Arizona State. Kick-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. and it will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
