"Our team played incredibly hard and I'm just sorry that our seniors couldn't go out with a win," head coach Rich Manning said. "The team's resilience has been tested a lot this year and they continue to fight until the end. We had some chances to equalize late but were just unlucky at the end."
Prior to the contest, Utah honored the contributions of 10 senior student-athletes; Darby Broeker, Sarah Duncan, Ashton Hall, Avery Jenkins, Monica Larsen, Cheyanne Mulcock, Molly Poletto, Jill Robison, Katie Taylor and McKel Wall.
"This senior class took me in when I arrived as a freshman and I've played with all of them the last three years, so it's very hard to see them leave" defender Megan Trabert said. "The help and support they provided not only myself, but everyone on this team, is something that we will never forget. They've meant so much to the program that I just wish we could have gotten a win today."
When the game started, ASU got the first opportunity as Tommi Goodman was denied by Lindsey Luke in the 14th minute. Utah's initial try occurred when Trabert headed a corner opportunity high.
The Sun Devils were able to break through in the 20th minute as Cali Farquharson scored her 13th goal of the season off a pass from McKenzie Berryhill. Luke denied the junior from adding to her total before halftime in the 34th minute.
Utah pressed for the tying goal before halftime as the returning Mariah Elmer provided a spark. Janie Kearl, who was injured on Friday, also created a late chance off the bench.
In the second half, Luke denied Lucy Lara Farquharson while the Utes dialed up the offense. Jenkins and Taylor each had looks at the equalizer, while Baylee Nielsen and Katie Rigby each went wide with attempts.
Despite the pressure, ASU doubled its lead through Farquharson as she grabbed her second goal of the match in the 68th minute off a lead pass from Lara.
Finding itself trailing, Utah showed the resilience it's been known for all season. Elmer continued to pester the ASU back line and Jill Robison forced a save from Chandler Morris in the 76th minute. Off the ensuing corner, Trabert headed home from Jenkins delivery to halve the Ute deficit.
Sensing their chance to draw even, Utah kept firing at goal. Taylor forced a save from Morris and after Robison flashed a try high, Taylor hit the post from a sharp angle.
Taylor Slattery found herself with space in the box but Morris denied her in the 89th minute and Trabert's last-gasp header off a free kick dribbled wide in the closing seconds.
Utah closes its regular season on Friday at Colorado. The game will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks starting at noon MT.
