"I thought we played some really good volleyball today," said head coach Beth Launiere. "I thought we battled pretty much point for point with a very good team. There was very little separation between us, so I was really proud with the way we played."
Freshman Eliza Katoa registered five kills in a first set that went back-and-forth between the Utes and the Cardinal, but Stanford tallied a late 4-0 run and closed out the set winning seven of the final nine points to win 25-20 and take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Following a 3-0 Stanford run out of the timeout, both teams would trade points until a 4-2 run from the Cardinal pulled the visiting team within two points, down 21-19, and forcing the Utes to call a timeout.
Utah won the next two points to take a 23-19 lead, but Stanford came right back with back-to-back points to make it 23-21 and force the Utes to call its final timeout of the set. Dalton's seventh kill of the set put Utah up set-point, 24-21, but Stanford's next two points pulled the Cardinal within one until Bateman's kill gave Utah the set, 25-23.
"Our staff is doing a nice job of making adjustments," said Launiere. "We are able to come out and do different coming out of the break We just did a few things different that helped us out and I thought we were able to carry those into the fourth set as well."
Stanford took an early 6-3 lead in set four, but Utah would not fade away and following back-to-back kills from Anae, Utah trailed the Cardinal by just a point, 16-15.
