SALT LAKE CITY - Middle blocker Erin Redd posted a match-high 12 kills and Shelby Dalton had a match-high eight blocks, but the University of Utah volleyball fell to No. 15 Oregon (19-25, 15-25, 21-25) in a Pac-12 Conference match Saturday at Crimson Court.
Utah (6-8, 1-4 Pac-12) held a 15.5 to 7 edge in team blocking over Oregon but was outhit .162 to .078 and out-dug 47 to 29 for the match.
"We competed well tonight," Utah head coach Beth Launiere said. "We were much better at playing with a lot more confidence and energy and aggressiveness tonight. Obviously, we came up against a good opponent. [Oregon] played fast and it was difficult for us, but we competed hard. We made little adjustments to the lineup and Shelby Dalton did some nice things. We're young and we're playing good competition so all I am asking is for them to compete hard and have a lot of energy and to start to play with confidence and some composure. We did that tonight."
Redd hit double-figures in kills for the third time this season and for the second straight match. She registered a .450 hitting percentage for the match with 12 kills on 20 attempts and only three errors.
Dalton posted two solo blocks and registered six block assists to go along with three kills and two digs. Senior middle blocker Danielle Killpack finished just one block shy of tying her season-high mark for blocks. She was credited with two solo blocks and five block assists in the match.
"We switched to a 6-2 attack for the match, just to get more offense," Launiere said. "Our offense has been struggling, but it also gives us a bigger block. [Dalton] is a nice big right side block so it let our setters share time and some of the responsibility."
In her second start of the season, Abby Simmons split setting duties with McKenzie Odale for the Utes. Simmons handed out 14 assists, while Odale distributed 13.
Oregon led 4-2 in the early-going of the first set before taking 10 out of the next 12 points to jump out to a 14-6 lead. The Utes cut their deficit to three points with a 6-1 run (15-12) but could get no closer than three (20-17) as Oregon earned a 25-19 first-set win. Redd had four kills on six attempts for a .667 efficiency in the set, while Killpack posted three blocks. The Utes held the Ducks to a .135 clip on the attack, but could only muster .081 themselves. Utah did manage a 5.5 to 0 advantage in team blocks during the opener. The Utes fell to 1-6 this season when suffering a first-set loss.
The Ducks took the first three points of the second set and worked their way to a six-point advantage (8-2) after putting together a 5-1 run. Oregon led by as many as seven points (11-4) but Utah cut its deficit to four (11-7) after a 3-0 spurt. Unfortunately, the Ducks pieced together a 5-1 stretch to push their lead to as many as nine (17-8) en route to a 25-15 second-set victory. Schofield and Redd had two kills apiece in the set and the Utes held a 3.5 to 1.0 advantage in team blocks over the Ducks.
There were six ties in the third set (6-6) before Utah took four consecutive points to assume a 10-6 lead. The Utes led by as many as five (12-7) but the Ducks quickly came back to tie the set at 13 points apiece after a 6-1 run. The set would be tied once more (14-14) then Oregon accelerated to a 17-14 edge after a 3-0 spurt. Utah responded with a 4-1 run of its own to force the 10th tie of the set at 18-18. Unfortunately, Oregon took the following five points and eventually clinched the match with a 25-21 win in the third frame.
"We're young, and unfortunately earlier in the season we were playing a little better," Launiere said. "But as we are starting to get into Pac-12 play, we are trying some different lineups. We have got such a young team, I have to try these things and give different people opportunities. We're a little shaky at times, but it was a good effort tonight and that's what I can ask for and I felt like we could build off of from this match."
No. 15 Oregon (11-1, 4-0 Pac-12) has won 10 consecutive matches and was led by nine kills apiece from Alaina Bergsma and Ariana Williams.
The Utes continue their four-match Pac-12 homestand next weekend, starting against UCLA on Friday at 7 p.m. Utah then hosts USC on Sunday at 2 p.m.
