SALT LAKE CITY - Senior middle blocker Danielle Killpack turned in a match-high seven blocks to go with seven kills, but the University of Utah volleyball team lost to No. 3 Stanford, 3-0 (18-25, 22-25, 18-25) in a Pac-12 Conference match Saturday at Crimson Court.
Utah (9-17, 4-13 Pac-12) outblocked Stanford in the match, 11.5 to 11.0, but was outhit .234 to .113. The Utes have had more blocks than their opponents in 19 of 26 matches this year.
"Stanford is a very good team," Utah head coach Beth Launiere said. "But we had them on the ropes at certain times during the match. At the end of both the first and third sets was when we gave up some runs of points. There were some really good rallies. We played at a really high level. The scores didn't indicate how well we played for most of the match. We battled really well."
Other than blocking, we were able to win some long rallies," Launiere said. "Early in the season, we were losing the long rallies all of the time because they would get us out of system and as it went on, things were breaking down. Things are breaking down now. We still struggle getting kills, but we're winning more long rallies and that's an indication of how much better we're getting."
Killpack also turned in a team-high (minimum five attempts) .357 hitting percentage with seven kills on 14 swings and only a pair of errors.
Freshman outside hitter Shelby Dalton pitched in six blocks and six kills.
Sophomore outside hitter Morgan Odale posted a team-high 12 digs for her ninth double-digit-dig effort of the season and the 20th of her career. Odale also added six kills.
Freshman outside hitter Chelsey Schofield registered eight kills and eight digs.
Junior setter Abby Simmons distributed 23 assists to coordinate the Ute attack.
In her first career start at libero, freshman Lea Adolph had seven digs.
There were four ties early in the first set before consecutive Cardinal scores gave them a 6-4 lead. Stanford maintained its two-point edge until the 11-9 mark and would go on to build a five-point cushion at 19-14 en route to a 25-18 victory in the first set. The Utes outblocked the Cardinal, 5.0 to 3.0 and Dalton led the Utah attack with three kills. Stanford outhit Utah in the set, .206 to .139.
Utah took three of the first four points in the second set, but Stanford quickly tied the set for the first time at three points apiece. The set would be tied once more (4-4) but the Cardinal grabbed a 6-4 lead and would maintain at least a two-point lead the rest of the way during a 25-22 second-set win. Odale had four kills on 10 swings and Utah hit .250 on the attack. Killpack added three more blocks as Utah held a 3.5-2.0 edge in blocking. Unfortunately, Stanford was able to hit for a .270 mark in the frame.
Once again in the third set, the Utes took three of the first four points and kept their three-point edge until 7-4. Stanford quickly regrouped and took its first lead of the set at 9-8. Utah came back to tie the set four more times (13-13) before Stanford inched out to a 15-13 lead. The Utes took three of the following four points to cut its deficit to one at 18-17. The Cardinal finished strong with a 7-0 stretch to claim a 25-18 win to clinch the match.
No. 3 Stanford (19-4, 13-4 Pac-12) received a 12-kill, nine-dig, five-block performance from Rachel Browne.
The Utes head to the Grand Canyon State next weekend to face Arizona on Friday and Arizona State on Saturday. Both matches start at 7 p.m. Arizona time.
