LOS ANGELES - Sophomore libero Nikki Sim turned in a team-high 10 digs but the University of Utah volleyball lost in three sets at No. 6 UCLA (12-25, 14-25, 25-27) Saturday at the John Wooden Center.
Utah (8-13, 3-10 Pac-12) was outhit by UCLA in the match, .411 to .181, and the Bruins held a 5.0-3.0 advantage in team blocks.
In the back row of the Ute defense, sophomore libero Nikki Sim turned in a team-high 10 digs, her 14th double-digit-dig match of the season. The Salt Lake City, Utah native now has recorded four straight 10-plus-dig matches.
The Ute attack was led by sophomore outside hitter Morgan Odale, who registered nine kills and also added eight digs. Junior setter Abby Simmons dished out 15 assists, while McKenzie Odale contributed 11.
Sophomore middle blocker Erin Redd and freshman outside hitter Shelby Dalton both had two blocks apiece to tie for team-high honors.
Utah took two of the first three points in the opening set, but UCLA came through with a 6-1 run to grab an 8-3 lead. The Bruins went on to build a 13-point lead (20-9) and would go on to take the first set, 25-12. Morgan Odale had three kills in the frame and Sim came up with three digs in the back row of the Ute defense. The Bruins hit for a .517 clip and held the Utes to a .000 mark. UCLA held a slight 1.0-0.0 edge in team blocks.
There were four ties (4-4) in the second set before Utah took consecutive points to seize a 6-4 edge. The set would be tied two more times before the Bruins claimed a 9-7 edge. UCLA extended its lead to seven points (17-10) en route to a 25-14 second-set victory. Utah's offensive attack in the set was paced by Morgan Odale, who added six more kills and Sim added a pair of digs in the back row of the Utah defense. Morgan Odale secured three more kills in the set and the Utes outhit the Bruins in the frame, .289 to .273.
The Utes jumped out to a 6-2 lead early in the third frame, its largest lead of the match, via a 4-0 run. Utah worked its lead up to five points at 11-6 before a 7-2 UCLA run brought the Bruins within a point, 13-12. The set was then tied eight more times (25-25) before a Bruin kill and block gave them a 27-25 match-clinching victory.
No. 6 UCLA (18-3, 11-2 Pac-12) was paced by 23 kills on 37 swings and only two errors for a .568 hitting percentage. Setter Lauren Van Orden dished out 36 assists, while Lainey Gera had a match-high 12 digs.
The Utes travel to No. 16 Oregon next Friday and Oregon State next Saturday. First serve is set for 7 p.m. PT.
