This Weekend's Action...
The University of Utah women's soccer team (5-13-1, 3-2-1 MWC) wraps up the regular season Saturday as the Utes host No. 14 BYU (13-2-2, 4-1-1 MWC) in the Deseret First Duel. Kickoff from Ute Field is slated for 7 p.m. MT. It will be Senior Day as the team says goodbye to three seniors playing their final home match for the Utes.
Trick-or-Treat at the Red-Out!!
Saturday's game against BYU will be the RED OUT game, as fans are all encouraged to wear RED. The first 300 fans in attendance will recieve a free Red Rally Towel. There will also be plenty of Halloween candy for all trick-or-treaters and the best Red-Themed Halloween costume will recieve a prize pack that includes a Utah t-shirt, UTAH UTES scarf and more.
The All-Time Series...
Utah holds a 5-16-1 all-time record against BYU, including a 2-7-0 mark at Ute Field. The Cougars have won three straight meetings in the series, including a 2-1 overtime win last year in Provo and a 5-0 victory in their last contest at Ute Field in 2008. The Utes' last win over BYU was a 1-0 result in Provo in 2007. Their last home victory against the Cougars came in 2006 by a 1-0 margin.
Hair Driving the Utes Forward...
Senior forward Lauren Hair tallied four points in Utah's 3-0 victory against UNLV on Saturday as she was involved in every scoring play. Hair notched assists on the first and third goals of the game and accounted for the second one herself. Her helper on the game winner from redshirt sophomore midfielder Katie Martinez marked her third game-winning assist of the season.
Hair now leads the Utes in goals scored (5), assists (5), points (15), shots (45) and shots on goal (25). Her five goals and 15 points each tie previous single-season bests for Hair, as she also scored five goals as a sophomore in 2008 and tallied 15 points as a freshman in 2007.
Turpen Remains MWC Leader in Saves...
With one games remaining in the regular season, Utah junior goalkeeper Hannah Turpen leads the league in total saves (87) and saves per game (5.12).
The first Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Week during conference play, Turpen recorded her second shutout of the year Saturday in Utah's 3-0 victory against UNLV, making four saves. She also made four stops in the 1-0 loss to SDSU on Thursday.
Turpen needs just two saves to tie for the fourth-highest single-season save total in Utah history. She is chasing Tawni Martineau, who posted 89 saves in back-to-back seasons (1997-98).
The Conference Picture...
New Mexico clinched at least a share of the MWC regular season championship over the weekend. Now on 16 points with one game remaining, the Lobos can do no worse than tie with BYU, should the Cougars beat the Utes on Saturday. However, if Utah is victorious, the Utes would own 13 points and could finish as high as a second-place tie with BYU, and would then own the head-to-head tiebreaker for conference tournament seeding.
Utah can finish no worse than tied for fourth place and could finish as high as second, with an SDSU loss and a win over BYU. The Aztecs host UNLV Friday and would secure at least a second-place finish with a win. A draw would give them at least a tie for second place, and a loss could drop them as low as fourth, depending on the outcome of Utah vs. BYU.
Scouting This Weekend's Opposition...
BYU Cougars
BYU enters this week following a 1-0 home win over San Diego State and a 1-1 home draw with UNLV last weekend. The Cougars will also play a non-conference contest before their annual clash with the Utes as they head to Santa Clara, Calif., for a Thursday game against the Broncos.
BYU is led offensively by Kassidy Shumway, who has accounted for six goals and five assists for 17 points. Jennie Marshall (7 goals, 2 assists) and Carlee Payne (5 goals, 6 assists) sit just behind her with 16 points each. A total of 10 different Cougars have found the back of the net this season.
Defensively, McKinzie Olson has allowed only eight goals in net this year for a GAA of 0.46. She has made 56 saves for a save percentage of 87.5% and has recorded seven shutouts.
BYU is coached by Jennifer Rockwood, who holds a 223-67-22 record and is now in her 14th season at the Cougar helm.
Last Time Out...
Utah bounced back from Thursday's 1-0 loss to SDSU with a 3-0 shutout victory against UNLV on Saturday. It was Utah's second shutout in conference play and tied the team-high for most goals scored in a game this year.
