OGDEN, Utah - The Utah baseball team continued its extra inning struggles, falling to New Mexico, 4-3, in the final game of the series on Saturday afternoon in Ogden at Lindquist Field.
With the score tied at 3-3 after seven innings, Utah had several hard hits in the eighth but New Mexico made some good plays to get out of the inning. C.J. Cron hit a hard liner to third that was stopped while Austin Jones had a hard-hit ball to the gap in left center, but Lobo center fielder Max Willett laid out to make a diving catch for the third out of the inning.
The Utes got out of a jam in the ninth inning, forcing Kevin Atkinson into a ground out with two on base to end the threat. Although Utah would put one on in the bottom of the inning with Michael Beltran beating out the throw for an infield single with two outs, Jason Oatman came in to pitch and struck out Corey Shimada to end the inning.
The Lobos took the lead in the 10th, with Brian Cavazos-Galvez leading off the inning with a home run. New Mexico loaded the bases with one out before reliever Greg Krause got a pair of ground outs.
New Mexico reliever Cole White got three quick outs to end the game, earning the save.
The Utes took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Shimada led off the game with a double to center field. He was sacrificed over by Tyler Yagi and scored when Rick Cornu hit a triple off the wall in right.
New Mexico got on the board in the third, scoring two runs after Ryan Honeycutt singled to left with two on base. Utah tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the inning. Shimada had his second hit of the day with a single to right center. He stole both second and third, scoring when Yagi doubled to left center.
Each team scored a run in the seventh to keep the game tied, 3-3. Honeycutt had his second RBI hit of the day with a single to left center for the Lobos while Devin Walker scored after Beltran reached on an error for the Utes in the bottom of the frame.
Utah starter Jordan Whatcott allowed two runs and six hits over six innings pitched with six strikeouts. Bennett Askew, Tyler Andersen and Joe Pond each pitched in the seventh, with Pond pitching into the ninth. Pond allowed one hit in his two innings pitched, striking out two.
The Utes were led at the plate by Shimada, who was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Honeycutt paced New Mexico with a 2-for-4 performance, including three RBI.
