Second Half Surge Keeps Utes Undefeated, 73-63

SALT LAKE CITY - Behind double-doubles from Kalee Whipple and Katie King the Utah women's basketball team earned a 73-63 grind it out victory over TCU in on Wednesday, Feb. 4.
Down 35-26 at halftime, Utah (15-6, 8-0 MWC) began its comeback by using the first five minutes of the half to go on a 12-4 run and pull within a point, 39-38. Whipple had five points early in the run while King scored the final four with a pair of jumpers. Although TCU's Micaela Younger scored the next two points, Whipple was fouled hitting a layup at the 13:06 mark to bring the Utes within one, tying the game at 41-41 by completing the three-point play.
Whipple's three-point bucket with 12:12 left gave Utah the lead for good, 44-41.
Utah was able to pull out to as much as a seven-point lead as the minutes ticked down, but TCU (13-8, 5-3 MWC) was able to stay close, cutting the lead to three, 66-63, after a pair of free-throws from TK LaFleur. However, it was all Utah in the final two minutes of the game by scoring the final seven points - including a pair of free throws from Morgan Warburton and Janita Badon - to win by the final ten-point margin, 73-63.
Whipple had her second double-double of the season with 21 points and 11 rebounds. She also had three steals. King scored 11 points with a game-high 12 rebounds for her team-high fifth double-double of the year. Warburton rallied from a two-point first half to score 15 in the second half for 17 points, including 8-for-8 from the free-throw line.
The Utes pulled down 46 rebounds, their third-highest total this season.
TCU took as much as a 12-point lead late in the first half, bolstered by 7-of-7 shooting from behind the arc. The Horned Frogs would go 1-of-10 from three-point range in the second half and were held to 31-percent shooting overall from the field. TCU was led by 27 points and nine rebounds from Helena Sverrisdottir. LaFleur was also in double figure scoring with 12 points.
Utah continues its home stretch on Sunday, Feb. 8, against Wyoming. The game will be televised on CBS College Sports.
