Get to Know Newcomer Guard Filipa Barros

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Women's Basketball is gearing up for the 2026-27 season and with the new season the Utes are welcoming nine newcomers, transfer, Filipa Barros being one of them.

Barros, a Vermoim Maia, Portugal, native joins the Utes after spending four seasons at California Baptist. In her final season at CBU, Barros averaged 11 points, 10 rebounds and five assists per game. She led the team in rebounding, steals, assists and three point percentage. She helped the Lancers win the WAC Championship title while earning Tournament MVP to help CBU to its second-ever NCAA Tournament berth.

Why did you choose Utah?

A: I chose Utah because of the style of play. It's very fast, they like to share the ball. They like to shoot threes. It's similar to the way I used to play at my old school. When I came on a visit I fell I really liked the people. The girls are cool, the coaches are very welcoming and that had a major impact on my decision. Also, one of my best friends from Portugal, Inês Vieira, played here and she told me great things about it.

What is a core basketball memory for you?

A: Last year at CBU when we won the WAC Tournament. It sent us to March Madness and that was our main goal of the season. Winning the title with some of my best friends was amazing.

What's your favorite thing about Salt Lake City so far?

A: I really like the mountains! I'm so excited to see snow, I've never seen snow in my life before so I can't wait.

What's something about your basketball game that you're really proud of?

A: I would say my rebounding skills. I'm a point guard and being able to rebound is a huge skill in this spot.

What's something about your basketball game you are working on improving?

A: Finishing on a basket in different ways.

What's currently on your FYP?

A: It's showing me a lot of things about my city in Portugal.

What would your walk-up song be?

A: When I See You by Fantasia

What's a food from home that you can't get here that you really miss?

A: Lasagna. It's different in Europe than here in America. It's way better there.

What was the last thing you asked ChatGPT?

A: Where is a good place to go for a walk near my house.

What is your favorite TV Show?

A: All-American

What is something that everyone knows about you?

A: I'm lowkey colorblind. At CBU my teammates would always give me a hard time but they would tell everyone. It's not a high level of colorblindness but just enough to make it noticeable sometimes.

What's something about yourself that you genuinely love?

A: That I'm always laughing. I'm a happy person.

What are three words to describe yourself?

A: Genuine, Hard-Working and Friendly

What is one thing that you want the world to know about you?

A: That no matter what happens I will never give up.
