ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - New Mexico scored 11 unanswered runs in racing past the University of Utah baseball team this afternoon, 13-3.
The Utes, who left nine runners on base, drop their fifth straight game.
"We made some mistakes in the fifth inning and we gave them some runs and some breathing room," said head coach Bill Kinneberg. "Our relief pitchers came in and they didn't get the job done.
"I feel like it was a complete breakdown on offense, defense and hitting. It was very frustrating."
The two teams exchanged blows as they both tallied a run in each of the first two innings. The Utes (13-19 overall, 3-7 Mountain West) captured the 3-2 lead when DC Legg hit an RBI single to right field in the fourth inning. It scored Fred Ferguson who got on with a one-out double to left field. New Mexico rallied, though, scoring in each of its last four at bats in taking the 10-run win.
The Utes did hammer out 12 hits today, two shy of the 14 base knocks that New Mexico tallied. Cooper Blanc led all Ute hitters with three hits this afternoon. He was 3-for-3. The only other Utah players with multi-hit days were Dustin Hennis (2-for-4 with one RBI) and Ferguson (2-for-4 with one run scored).
Both starting hurlers were the pitchers of record today. Utah's Brian Budrow takes the loss. He went six innings and allowed four earned runs and three walks. Budrow fanned three UNM batters.
Jacob Norton is the winning pitcher, having thrown for 7.2 innings and allowing 12 hits and three earned runs.
Utah plated its first two runs on Hennis' bases-loaded single in the first and on Corey Shimada's RBI fielder's choice in the second. Shimada hit a grounder to second with the bases loaded. Jesse Shriner scored, but Legg was thrown out at second.
However, UNM answered in each of the first two innings, leaving the score tied, 2-2, after two innings.
The Utes took the lead in the third, but UNM scored two in the fifth, two in the sixth, four in the seventh and three in the eighth to run away with the victory.
Five Lobo batters had multi-hit days. They were led by the 3-for-4, three-run effort of Kevin Atkinson. However, Rafael Neda did the most damage, tallying five RBI and three runs on 2-for-5 hitting.
The same two teams will square off again tomorrow in Albuquerque. First pitch is set for noon.
