SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah volleyball head coach Beth Launiere has been named the Bison/AVCA West Region Coach of the Year in the midst of leading the Utes to a 2008 Mountain West Conference championship and are currently playing in the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16. The honor makes Launiere eligible for the AVCA National Coach of the Year award.
"It's an honor to be recognized and is a reflection of the great season we have had so far," said Launiere. "This is an entire staff award. My assistants Burt Fuller and Heather Olmstead are an invaluable part of this program and together we have worked hard to reach the success we are experiencing."
Entering the NCAA Tournament as the No. 12 seed, Launiere has the Utes in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2001.
Utah is 26-5 overall this season, the 13th 20-win season of her career.
Launiere has won three Bison/AVCA Division I West Region Coach of the Year honors in her career, the first two coming in 2001 and 2006.
In her 19th season at Utah, Launiere took Utah to its 10th NCAA Tournament in 11 years and won her sixth MWC title (regular-season and conference combined).
