SALT LAKE CITY - Utah middle blocker Emillie Toone tied her season high with 13 kills and added a match-high eight blocks as the University of Utah volleyball team defeated TCU in three sets (25-18, 25-17, 25-15) Sunday at Crimson Court.
Utah (17-5, 9-2 MWC) has won nine consecutive Mountain West Conference matches and now boasts a perfect 5-0 record this season against conference foes at Crimson Court. The Utes have not dropped a conference match since Sept. 20.
The Utes are 9-1 at Crimson Court this season.
"It was a great match for us the entire way," Utah head coach Beth Launiere said. "Midway through the first set, we were able to disrupt TCU with our block and we kept it going the entire afternoon. It felt like [TCU] was out of sync most of the time, while we were able to stay focused and play well in every phase of the game."
Toone was the only player in the match who hit double figures in kills. The American Fork, Utah native registered 13 kills for the third time this season on just 21 swings and zero attack errors with a match-high .619 hitting percentage (minimum five attack attempts). Toone also played a big role in the Utes' defensive system, coming up with a match-high eight block assists.
"[Toone] just played well the whole way and really stepped up to lead the team," Launiere said. "TCU was keying on Lori [Baird] so much that it really opened things up for everyone else to get a lot of kills for us on the attack."
Toone helped the Utes outhit the Horned Frogs .283 to .048 for the match and Utah also earned an 11.5 to 6.5 edge in team blocks.
Chelsey Sandberg turned in a season-high eight kills on 17 attempts for a .353 hitting percentage, the second-highest mark in the match. The West Jordan, Utah native also had three blocks.
"Chelsey was probably the player who took the most advantage of [the Horned Frogs'] attention on Lori [Baird]," Launiere said. "There were a lot of openings for her and she really made the most of them today."
Baird was credited with six digs, five kills and three blocks in the match.
Libero Keisha Fisher tied outside hitter Kathryn Haynie for match-high honors at eight digs apiece, while Cinthia Silva turned in seven.
Setter Stephanie Shardlow turned in 23 assists, and Abby Simmons chipped in 12.
The match opened with a back-and-forth first set that featured 11 ties and five lead changes. The Utes scored three consecutive points and seized a 5-2 lead, but TCU came up with a 4-0 run to tie the set at seven points apiece. The set would be tied five more times before TCU took a 16-13 lead, its largest of the set. Utah came back to score three consecutive points to tie TCU at 16 and set the tone for the remainder of the match by going on a 9-2 run to take a 25-18 first-set win
Utah outhit TCU .185 to -.065 and held a 9.5 to 4.5 edge in blocks over the Horned Frogs. Sandberg and Toone both had set-high four kills. Sandberg hit .800 in the set, needing only five attempts and not committing an error on the attack. Toone came through with six blocks in the set.
After falling behind 2-0 in the second set, Utah took the next four points to take a 4-2 edge and went on a 9-0 run to secure an early 13-3 lead. The Utes extended their lead to 11 points (16-5) en route to a 25-17 win in the second set. Toone continued to excel with eight kills and two more blocks, while Haynie heated up and registered five kills of her nine kills in the match and four of her eight digs.
With the third set tied at 3-3, the Utes jumped out to an 8-3 lead by scoring five consecutive points and extended their lead to seven points at 12-5 with a 4-1 run. Utah extended its margin to eight points at 21-13 and carried that momentum to a 25-15 third-set win to clinch the match.
TCU (17-8, 6-6 MWC) was led by seven kills and by Lauren Otto. Kourtney Edwards had a team-high five blocks, while four different Horned Frogs shared the team high with six digs apiece.
The match will be televised on CBS College Sports Tuesday at 7 p.m. MT.
