Utes Close Weekend with 3-1 Loss to UNLV

LAS VEGAS - The Utah women's volleyball team fell to UNLV, 3-1, on Saturday, Sept. 15, in its second Mountain West Conference game of the season.
The Utes (2-7, 0-2 MWC) were led by Kathryn Haynie's 18 kills and 14 digs. Whitney Webb had 13 kills while Kate Robison tallied 12 kills with 17 digs. Stephanie Shardlow and Keisha Fisher shared the setting duties, with Fisher coming away with 37 assists while Shardlow recorded 23.
"We played hard the whole match," head coach Beth Launiere said. "The end of game three was critical for us. It's tough to lose on the road."
After dropping game one, 30-19, Utah rebounded in game two to tie the match at 1-1 with a 30-25 victory. Up 15-12, the Utes went on a 4-1 run to take a six-point lead, 19-13, a margin that Utah would hold through most of the remainder of the contest. As a team, the Utes hit .311 during the second game, their best percentage of the match.
In game three, Utah held as much as a five-point lead, 19-14, before UNLV (10-1, 2-0 MWC) went on a 7-2 drive to tie the game, 21-21. Although the Utes would pull back ahead by as many as three points before UNLV surged late, led by two kills from Jessica Walters, to take the 30-28 win.
After jumping out to an early lead, UNLV held on to down Utah in the fourth game, 30-25.
The Rebels were led by Lauren Miramontes's 20 kills. Maria Aladjova had 18 kills and 14 digs while Melod Nua had 54 assists. Jada Walker served up two aces on the afternoon.
Utah returns to action on Friday, Sept. 21, against Colorado State at 8 p.m. The game will be televised on the mtn.
