Utah Baseball Falls One Run Short at Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The University of Utah baseball team dropped a 6-5 decision to Santa Clara Saturday afternoon at Schott Stadium. The Utes out-hit the Broncos 11-9. But Santa Clara took advantage of three Utah errors to score three unearned runs.
Utah (0-2) scored its first runs of the season in the first inning. Shortstop Corey Shimada drew a walk and later scored on an RBI single off the bat of third baseman Jay Brossman. With two outs, left fielder Dustin Hennis' single to right-center brought home designated hitter Bret Baldwin, who had reached on an error.
Utah's 2-0 lead was short-lived, however. Santa Clara (3-2) scored five runs in the home half of the first. The Broncos had just three hits in the inning off Ute starter Lucas Trinnaman. But they took advantage of two hit batsmen, a Utah error and a passed ball to push five runs across and grab a 5-2 edge. The big blow was a two-run double down the left-field line off the bat of ????? Alcanter.
Utah tied the contest at 5-5 in the third. Brossman ripped a one-out, solo home run to left to pull he Utes within one run. Right fielder John Welsh drew a walk and stole second. With two outs, catcher Cody Guymon singled up the middle, plating Welsh with the tying run.
Santa Clara grabbed the lead right back in the bottom of the third. The Broncos got a leadoff single from Carl Bacon off Utah reliever Stephen Fife. After a sacrifice and a groundout, Bacon moved to third with two down. Alcanter then came through with what was the eventual game-winner, driving Bacon home by legging out an infield hit.
Trailing 6-5, Utah's best chance to tie the game was in the sixth. First baseman Erich Kemp led off the inning with a double. But the next three Ute batters all succumbed to strikeouts, ending the threat.
In all, Santa Clara pitchers Nate Garcia, Steve Kalush and Jeff Lombard combined to rack up 14 strikeouts. Garcia (1-0) went five innings to pick up the victory. Lombard picked up the save, his first of the season.
While Trinnaman lasted just one inning for Utah, only two of the five runs he allowed were earned. Fife (0-1) suffered the loss, despite working four innings and allowing one run on six hits. Brad DeVore tossed 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, while Brett Bruneel recorded the final out for Utah.
At the plate, Kemp led the Utes with a 3-for-4 performance. Brossman was 2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBIs. Center fielder Nate Burnham was 2-for-4 as well.
Utah and Santa Clara wrap up their three-game set Sunday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. PST.
