Utah Baseball Picks Up First Win of 2007

SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah baseball team picked up its first victory of the season Saturday afternoon. The Utes defeated New Mexico State 7-4 at Presley Askew Field in the second game of a three-game series.
Utah (1-4) jumped on top 5-1 early and held the Aggies off. The Utes tallied three runs in the top of the first, all coming with two outs. Center fielder Nate Burnham was hit by a pitch and first baseman Erich Kemp later drew a walk. With two outs, right fielder John Welsh drove Burnham in with a single up the middle. Then, with the bases loaded, catcher Jesse Shriner and second baseman Mike Mitchell drew RBI walks to give Utah a 3-0 lead.
New Mexico State (2-3) tallied a single run off Utah starter Lucas Trinnaman in the bottom of the first to pull within two runs. The Utes increased their advantage to 5-1 in the top of the fourth. Shriner walked and later scored on a Burnham single. Shortstop Corey Shimada later scored on a New Mexico State error.
The Aggies picked up single runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings to pull within two runs, 5-3.
Utah put two insurance runs on the board in the top of the eighth. Shriner walked to lead off the inning, followed by a one-out single off the bat of Shimada. A wild pitch put the two runners in scoring position. With two outs, left fielder Nick Lowery poked a two-run single to left field to put the Utes on top, 7-3.
Relief pitcher Stephen Fife (1-1) picked up the victory for Utah. He tossed 3 1/3 innings, allowing one hit and one run. He struck out three and walked two. Trinnaman allowed two runs - one earned - in 4 2/3 innings of work. Closer Brett Bruneel allowed a single run in the ninth inning, accounting for the final score.
Bryan Robinson (0-1) suffered the loss for New Mexico State. He allowed five runs in four innings of work, walking six Ute batters.
The rubber game of the series will be played Sunday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
