Utah Volleyball Wins Seventh Straight

SALT LAKE CITY - It was another 3-0 win for the No. 21-ranked University of Utah volleyball team (9-2 overall, 2-0 Mountain West) tonight as it swept its ninth opponent on the year, beating Air Force Academy in three games.
Game scores were 30-18, 30-14 and 30-14. The Falcons fall to 4-11 on the year and to 0-2 in conference action.
"I liked how we executed here tonight," said head coach Beth Launiere. "I was happy that everyone got to play tonight and there wasn't a drop in performance. Our bench came in and did well and our execution didn't slip at all."
The Utes got off to a slow start as it didn't take its first lead in game one until it broke a 17-17 tie. However, it broke the stalemate with an impressive 13-1 run. From there on out, Utah's offense was hitting on all cylinders as the Utes hit .571 in game two and .481 in the final frame.
Airial Salvo led the Utes with 13 kills. She had her usual double-double outing tonight as she chimed in with 10 digs as well. Emillie Toone's arm was the hottest on the evening, though. She tallied seven kills on 11 swings, without committing an error. She hit .636 for the match.
The offense went through Sydney Anderson in game one as she dished out 12 assists and guided Utah to a .278 hitting percentage. Shannon Krug came on the last two frames and handed out 28 assists as the team hit .527 under Krug.
Utah owned the 11-6 edge in team blocks and held the Falcon offense to a -.132 hitting percentage. The visitors never hit better than -.059 for the night and that was in game one. They bottomed out hitting a meager -.233 in game three.
Leading the defense was Chelsey Sandberg. She came off the bench to tally a team-high four total blocks. Emillie Toone and Whitney Webb helped out with three total blocks of their own.
Connie Dangerfield led from the back row with a match-high 15 digs.
Air Force's leaders were Jasmine Pettie (four kills and four blocks), Kim Kallabis (eight assists) and Jaclyn Fleming (10 digs).
Utah returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 21, when it begins a four-match road swing. It all starts with a road date at UNLV. First serve is set for 7 p.m. (PDT).
