ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of Utah baseball team dropped a 9-8 decision to New Mexico Sunday afternoon at Isotopes Park. The Lobos broke a tie in the bottom of the ninth, taking the one-run Mountain West Conference victory.
Utah (20-18, 4-6 MWC) trailed 8-6 after seven innings. But the Utes tied it up in the eighth. First baseman Jay Brossman singled, followed by a two-run blast to left field off the bat of Eric King. King's home run knotted the contest at 8-8.
After Utah went scoreless in the top of the ninth, New Mexico (27-13, 9-4) needed just one run to take the victory. With one out, Matt Foote stole second. The Utes intentionally walked Ian Hollick to put the double play in order. But Zach Arnett ripped a Brad DeVore offering to right-center field, pushing Foote across the plate with the game-winning run.
The Utes held a 2-0 lead in the second. Catcher Adam Frank had an RBI groundout, while left fielder Corey Shimada drove a run in with a single. New Mexico halved its deficit in the bottom of the inning. The Lobos grabbed a 6-2 advantage with a five-run fourth inning. Dane Hamilton notched a two-RBI triple and Jay Russell stroked a two-run double in the frame.
Utah shortstop Ryan Khoury pulled the Utes within three with a solo home run to lead off the fifth. Khoury and second baseman Bret Baldwin each had RBI singles in the sixth to pull within one run, 6-5. New Mexico tallied a single run in the sixth to make it 7-5. Both teams scratched out a run in the seventh to make it 8-6.
King and Khoury were both 3-for-5 at the plate to lead the Ute offense. King scored twice and drove two runs in, while Khoury scored once and drove in a pair. Khoury's home run was his team-leading 10th of the season. DeVore (3-3) suffered the loss for Utah. He tossed 2 1/3 innings and gave up just two runs in relief of Lucas Trinnaman and Shad McCord.
Russell and Hamilton did most of the damage for New Mexico, driving in three runs apiece. Chad Itokazu (2-1) picked up the victory, allowing two runs in 2 2/3 innings of work.
Utah is back in action again Tuesday, hosting Utah Valley State at Ute Field.
