SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah baseball team got just what the doctor ordered Tuesday afternoon - a date with Utah Valley State College. The Utes, who had lost seven of their last 10, hammered the Wolverines 14-1 at Ute Field.
Utah got on the board in the bottom of the first. First baseman Jay Brossman drew a two-out walk and Eric King crushed a Kyle Tash offering over the right-field fence to put the Utes up 2-0.
The Utes added two more in each of the second and third innings, grabbing a 6-1 advantage. Shortstop Ryan Khoury drove Adam Frank home with a single up the middle off Tash. Second baseman Bret Baldwin followed with a double to left, scoring Baldwin. In the third, Utah scored a pair of runs when King scored on a passed ball and center fielder John Welsh came across on a wild pitch.
Utah Valley State tallied an unearned run against Ute starter Brandon Ast in the top of the third. It was the only run the Wolverines would muster all day. Ast (3-1) shut UVSC down for seven innings, allowing the one unearned run on five hits. As struck out three batters and walked just one en route to the victory.
The Utes increased their advantage in the fourth. Left fielder Corey Shimada was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Khoury chased Shimada home with a double to left-center. Two batters later Brossman hit his eighth home run of the season to make it 9-1.
The Utah offense got on track again in the seventh. Kyle Wink, the fourth of six UVSC pitchers, allowed a walk to right fielder Mike Tummolo and a single to pinch-hitter Adam Frank. Shimada then crushed a Wink offering out to right field. The freshman's opposite field dinger gave Utah a 12-1 lead.
The Utes added two more in the eighth. Wolverine reliever Marcus Moore walked pinch-hitter Mike Mitchell and Tummolo. Mitchell scored on a double off the bat of Clayne Garrett, while Tummolo came across on a groundout by pinch-hitter Nic Nakagama. The two runs accounted for the final tally.
Khoury paced the Utah offense, going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Brossman, King and Shimada each tallied a pair of hits, as the Utes pounded out 16 hits.
Tash (4-3) took the loss for Utah Valley State. He allowed six runs in two innings of work. Eli Slesk tallied one-third of the Wolverines' six hits on the day. He was the only UVSC batter with more than one hit.
Utah plays its first home Mountain West Conference games this weekend. The Utes host UNLV Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Franklin Covey Field. Friday's first pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
