SALT LAKE CITY - The leading hitter in the Mountain West Conference stayed hot Tuesday afternoon. Utah senior shortstop Ryan Khoury drove in four runs, leading the Utes to a 7-3 non-conference win over Southern Utah at Ute Field.
Khoury was 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run and two walks. He scored two runs and notched three of his four RBIs on a three-run home run in the second inning. Khoury's big day at the plate was in support of a strong outing from Utah starting pitcher Brandon Ast.
Ast (2-1) allowed just two hits in five innings of work. No Southern Utah batter reached second base against the Ute starter. Ast struck out three Thunderbirds and did not allow a base on balls.
While Southern Utah (17-12) was being held scoreless, the Utah bats did all of their damage early in the contest. The Utes scored a single run in the first inning. Khoury drew a walk to lead off the inning, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a Jay Brossman double into the left-field corner.
Khoury put the Utes up 4-0 in the second inning. Catcher Josh Bell and left fielder Corey Shimada led off with back-to-back singles. Khoury then ripped a Derek Job offering over the left-field fence for a three-run home run - his sixth dinger of the season.
Utah (17-13) added to its lead in the third inning and once again, Khoury played a role. Right fielder Joe Mozeleski singled with one out, followed by a walk from Bell. A wild pitch moved the runners up to second and third. Shimada then lifted a fly ball to left, scoring Mozeleski with the sacrifice fly. Khoury singled to left field in the next at-bat, scoring Bell and knocking Job (1-1) from the game. Utah led 6-0 after three innings.
The Utes got on the board once more in the fourth. Brossman led off with a bloop double down the right-field line. Two batters later, Brossman scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of center fielder John Welsh to make it 7-0.
Greg Krause took over for Ast in the sixth. Between Ast and Krause, the two Utah pitchers retired 14 consecutive batters from the second inning through the sixth. Krause ran into a little trouble with control in the seventh and Southern Utah took advantage to finally light the scoreboard. The Thunderbirds took advantage of two walks and two doubles to pull within 7-3.
Utah reliever Brian Lane made his second appearance of the season, allowing a walk and a base hit over the final two innings to close out the four-run victory.
The Utes get back into Mountain West Conference play Thursday, opening a three-game set at San Diego State.
