No. 9 Volleyball Goes Perfect in MWC Play

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The No. 9-ranked University of Utah volleyball team (25-2, 16-0 Mountain West Conference) had a record-setting outing tonight when it topped Colorado State here in the regular season finale, 3-0.
Game scores were 30-28, 28-30, 30-21 and 32-30 as CSU falls to 17-9 overall and to 11-5 in league play.
"I thought this turned into a great volleyball match," said head coach Beth Launiere. "It was a heavyweight battle with a lot of big swings, big blocks and big digs. We worked as hard as we have all season to get this win and I am proud to see this team battle a CSU squad that had so many reasons to win tonight."
Among the milestones reached tonight, junior libero Connie Dangerfield chalked up her coveted 1,000th career dig. At 18-17 of game two, Dangerfield dug a ball off the block. She finished the match with 18 digs, upping her career number to 1,011.
The Utes not only tied the school record for wins in a season (25), they also became only the second school in league history to go undefeated in conference play. It duplicates the 2003 CSU team that went 14-0. Utah also extends its winning streak to an impressive 23 straight matches.
The Utes saw four players record double-doubles in the win. Whitney Webb (18 kills, 10 digs), Airial Salvo (14 kills, 10 digs), Emillie Toone (12 kills, 14 blocks) and Sydney Anderson (50 assists, 13 digs) all did the deed for Utah.
Webb's 18 kills led the way, as she was the team's most efficient hitter in collecting kills at a .483 (18-4-29) clip. Webb was one block shy of a triple-double (nine blocks).
Anderson set the attack with 50 assists but had an impressive line as she also had 13 digs, four kills, .444 (4-0-9) hitting and seven total blocks.
The defense held CSU to just .155 hitting and had a 23.5-4.5 edge in team blocks. Toone's 14 total blocks led the way but Webb and Lori Barid finished with nine and Anderson with seven. Dangerfield led all of Utah's back-row players with her 18 digs.
Leading the Rams tonight were Mekana Barnes (18 kills) and Ashley Fornstrom (60 assists, 19 digs and three blocks)
It's a quick turnaround for the No.1-seeded Utes as they start Mountain West Conference Tournament play this Thursday in Las Vegas. They play the winner of the play-in match between No. 8 New Mexico and No. 9 Air Force.
