Utah Baseball Signs Six Student-Athletes

SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah head baseball coach Bill Kinneberg has announced the signing of six student-athletes to national letters-of-intent. Tyler Andersen (West Jordan, Utah), Scott Cashman (Gig Harbor, Wash.), Robert Chimpky (Livermore, Calif.), D.C. Legg (Murrieta, Calif.), Hilton Richardson (Kirkland, Wash.) and Devin Walker (Pleasant Grove, Utah) are each slated to enroll at Utah in 2007-08 and be on the baseball team for the 2008 season.
Kinneberg said he was very pleased with the class of signees in this year's early signing period.
"This is kind of a breakthrough year for us," Kinneberg said. "Prior to this year, we hadn't had been able to sign many high school players. But five of these six are going to be freshmen for us next year.
"We really hit some crucial needs for the next few years with this group," Kinneberg continued. "This is the most athletic class we've ever signed."
The following is a look at each of Utah's latest recruits:
Tyler Andersen
Left-handed Pitcher, 5-8, 150, West Jordan, Utah/Jordan High School
Honors/Statistics: Earned a top 10 percent and top 30 rating in the nation by SPARQ, which measures baseball and athletic skill ... Named a 2007 Preseason All-American by the Baseball Factory and Team One ... Invited to participate in the 2007 All-American Tournament ... Named to the Northwest Championships All-Tournament team.
Coach Kinneberg Says: "After watching him throughout the fall, every time he went out there, he got outs. Tyler is a little left-handed pitcher, but he's a fierce competitor."
Scott Cashman
Infielder, 6-2, 185, Gig Harbor, Wash./Peninsula High School
Honors/Statistics: Earned first-team all-league honors as a sophomore ... Named second-team all-league as a junior ... Named Peninsula High team MVP as a sophomore ... Helped lead Peninsula High to second-place finish in state tournament as a junior ... Voted by his teammates to wear #22 as the player who best represents Seahawk Baseball ... Also a standout football and basketball player ... Seven-time first-team academic all-league.
Coach Kinneberg Says: "Scott can play shortstop or third base. He's a great basketball player and a very good athlete. He has a chance to be a real special player, once he can concentrate full-time on baseball."
Robert Chimpky
Right-handed Pitcher, 5-8, 155, Livermore, Calif./Chabot Junior College
Honors/Statistics: Four-time first-team all-league selection at Livermore High School ... Named Livermore High team MVP as a senior ... Played on a United States all-star team that toured Japan ... Earned the Dennis Chandler Memorial Award at Livermore High for his sportsmanship, skill and dedication ... Earned all-league honors at Chabot Junior College ... Took part in the 2006 Junior College All-Star Game.
Coach Kinneberg Says: "Robert is an interesting guy. He's small in stature, but when he's on the mound, he acts like he's 6-7. He's a hard thrower for his size. He has a terrific curve ball. His curve is his out pitch."
D.C. Legg
Infielder, Murrieta, Calif.,/Vista-Murrieta High School
Honors/Statistics: First-team all-league selection as a junior ... First-team All-CIF last season ... Named Player of the Year on the California All-Valley Team ... Earned second-team all-county for the Riverside area ... Two-time Academic All-Southwestern League choice.
Coach Kinneberg Says: "D.C.'s an interesting guy because he's the son of a coach. His Dad coached with me for five years at Wyoming. D.C. really knows how to play the game. He can play second or third base."
Hilton Richardson
Outfielder, 6-3, 190, Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington High School
Honors/Statistics: Earned 2005 Most Improved Award for Seattle area ... Named to the 2006 Area Code Team ... Played in the 2005-07 Pacific Northwest Championships ... Recorded the seventh-highest all-time SPARQ score ... Named to the 2006 Honor Roll at Lake Washington High.
Coach Kinneberg Says: "Hilton is one of the better athletes coming out of high school in the country. He is a very gifted athlete, who can really run. By the end of his career, he could really be a great player for us."
Devin Walker
Catcher, 6-1, 175, Pleasant Grove, Utah/Pleasant Grove High School
Honors/Statistics: Earned honorable mention Class 5A all-state honors in 2006... Named second-team All-Utah Valley as a junior ... Took part in the Area Code Games.
Coach Kinneberg Says: "We feel Devin is one of the best catchers in the western part of the United States. He's very good offensively, as well as being a strong defensive catcher."
