COLUMBIA, Mo. - The University of Utah volleyball team had the heady task of taking on its first ranked team tonight but came up short as it fell to No. 21-ranked Missouri, 3-0, as part of the Tiger Invitational in Columbia, Mo., tonight.
Game scores were 30-28, 30-22, and 30-21. The Utes (2-1 overall) will have another run at a ranked team when they battle No. 9 Tennessee on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Missouri wins in its season opener as it begins the season 1-0.
"We did a lot of good things tonight," commented head coach Beth Launiere. "But, we were up and down and inconsistent all night.
"Missouri is a very experienced team and it kept the pressure on us all evening. It was a tough match for us but I saw some good things out there tonight. It was a good match for us to be in and it showed us what we need to improve upon."
Utah led by as much as four, 21-17, in game one but Missouri surged to tie it at 25-25 en route to the two-point win. The Tigers stymied the Ute offense in games two and three as Utah hit a mere .070 and .083 in the final frames, respectively.
Freshman Airial Salvo led the Utes in bagging 10 kills for the match. She was the lone Ute in double digits as Emillie Toone racked up eight kills for the second-best total on the team. Shannon Krug set the attack in tallying 24 assists.
Utah held the narrow edge in team blocks for the match, 10-8. Defensively, Danielle Leichliter and Whitney Webb led the way with eight digs each. Toone's four blocks were also a team high.
Jessica Vander Looi led the Tigers with a game-high 13 kills. She was one of three MU players to tally double-digit kills. Lindsey Hunter led all players with 45 assists while Abbie Booth's 10 digs was also a match high. The tandem of Shen Danru and Lisa Boyd led the Tiger in blocking. They both had four total blocks.
