Volleyball Falls to CSU in Five

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The University of Utah volleyball team clawed its way back from a 2-1 deficit but couldn't overcome Colorado State tonight as the Rams tallied the five-game conference win here tonight.
The loss came on scores of 24-30, 30-21, 30-18, 21-30 and 15-11. Utah falls to 11-6 and to 3-3 in Mountain West play. CSU is now 10-4 and 4-1.
"I thought the match was a lot like most of our matches this year," head coach Beth Launiere said. "I saw some good things but we had some lapses too.
"We competed hard tonight and I think we're beginning to find who we are as a team. We defined some things that went wrong tonight and we're going to fix them and move on."
The Utes couldn't combat a paltry .116 hitting percentage, the lowest efficiency for Utah since conference play began. Utah never hit better than .161 over the five games.
The rivals each had 21.5 team blocks led by Emillie Toone's career-high 12 total blocks. Whitney Webb and Shannon Krug each had six and Airial Salvo and Shelly Sommerfeldt each had five.
Toone led the offense with a career-high-tying 13 kills. Sommerfeldt had 12 and Salvo helped out with 10 of her own. Krug led the way with 41 assists.
Defensively, Salvo had a team-best 13 digs and Danielle Leichliter helped out with 10.
The Rams hit .169 on the night and were led by Tess Rogers' 21 kills. Ashley Fornstrom had 60 assists, Katherine Whitney had 22 digs and Dre Downs recorded a team-best 11 blocks.
The Utes return to the friendly confines of Crimson Court this weekend when they host a pair of Mountain West Conference rivals. New Mexico is on the docket for Friday, Oct. 14, and Air Force on Saturday, Oct. 15.
