SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah volleyball team continued to reap the benefits of playing at Crimson Court as it topped New Mexico here tonight to win its sixth straight home victory of the year, 3-1.
Game scores were 30-22, 30-25, 23-30 and 30-23 as the Utes improve to 12-6 overall and to 4-3 in Mountain West play. New Mexico slips to 11-6 and to 3-4 on the year.
"We played very well in games one and two tonight," remarked head coach Beth Launiere. "But, New Mexico is a good team and showed that tonight, especially in game three.
"I thought we had a good rhythm for the most of the night and it felt like we weren't going to lose. We are starting to really click out there and are becoming more consistent as a team."
The Utes out-hit their rivals tonight, .274-.133, and were led by the double-double efforts of Airial Salvo and Shelly Sommerfeldt. Salvo had a match-high 18 kills and 10 digs while Sommerfeldt turned in a 14-kill, 11-dig showing.
Shannon Krug set the attack with a match-best 51 assists but also helped out on defense. She also recorded eight digs and four total blocks on the night.
Utah held the edge at the net, 13.5-7.0, and were led by Emillie Toone's six total blocks. Sommerfeldt helped out with five of her own. Danielle Leichliter's 15 digs led all back-row players.
The Utes and Lobos battled back and forth in game one but Utah was able to finally pull away and cruise to wins in games one and two. Utah held the 7-1 edge in team blocks and held UNM -.065 hitting in the game-one victory. Utah led from wire to wire in game two as it took an insurmountable 6-1 lead.
Utah saw a dip in its performance in game three. After hitting .300 over the first two games, the Utes hit a paltry .186 to UNM's .286. But, the home team rallied in game four to hit a match-best .317 and ran away with the four-game win.
Michelle Miller led the way with 12 kills for the visitors while Sarah Kwasigroch had a team-best 39 assists. Defensively, Niocole Ryan's 10 digs led the Lobos as did Chelsea Sondrup's five total blocks.
