Volleyball Topples UNLV in Three

SALT LAKE CITY -- The University of Utah volleyball team began the second half of league play by taking down second-place UNLV in a Mountain West Conference match here tonight, 3-0.
Game scores were 32-30, 30-19 and 30-25. Utah improves to 14-6 for the year and to 6-3 in loop action. UNLV stumbles to 9-10 and 5-2.
"I am very pleased with our performance here tonight," remarked head coach Beth Launiere. "We played good defense and I think our offense played strong against UNLV."
The Utes hit an impressive .304 for the match and were led by the front-line players of Airial Salvo, Lori Baird and Whitney Webb. The trio of youngsters combined to hit .388 for the match. Salvo led the way in bagging a match-best 13 kills on .414 hitting. Baird hit .381 on her way to 11 kills while Webb bagged 10 kills in hitting .364.
Shannon Krug set a nice match in nearly tallying a double-double on the night. She had a match-high 41 assists and tallied nine digs.
Utah held an 11-1 edge in team blocks after two games and finished out-blocking UNLV for the match, 13-5. Emillie Toone continued her dominance at the net in tallying eight total blocks. Shelly Sommerfeldt chimed in with five of her own while another four Utes recorded three on the night. Danielle Leichliter led all back-row players with a match-high 17 digs.
Game one was as exciting as the score would lead someone to believe. Utah had trailed by as much as four early in the frame but rallied to tie it at 26-26. UNLV had game point in hand at 30-29 but Utah pounded out the last three points to post the come-from-behind game-one victory.
Utah hit an eye-popping .486 in game two and used a 14-1 run to overcome a 13-16 deficit in the win. The Utes returned to hit a match-low .156 in game three but rallied once again for the come-from-behind win. They trailed 18-21 but clawed their way back into the driver's seat thanks to a 5-0 run. Utah led by two, 23-21, and never trailed again in bagging the five-point win.
The Rebels hit a meager .115 for the night and were led my Lauren Miramontes' 11 kills. Melody Nua set the attack with 34 assists while Michelle Banks' 10 digs and Miramontes' three blocks led the Rebel defense.
Utah returns to Crimson Court tomorrow when it will host San Diego State at 7 p.m.
